Serino can be explored through a range of interests: chestnut culture, the history of its springs, religious sites and outdoor activities. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on regional products, historic buildings or outdoor pursuits. These themes offer different ways to discover the area and help you choose a stay that reflects what interests you most about Serino.

Chestnut Culture and Regional Cuisine

Serino is part of the protected production area for Marrone/Castagna di Serino IGP. This gives chestnuts a clear regional connection and is of interest to travelers who appreciate local products as a way to discover a place. Canalarte includes three evenings when experienced local women prepare local dishes and regional gastronomic products in traditional costumes. Two aspects therefore come together: the protected production area for Marrone/Castagna and a festival format that highlights the preparation and presentation of local food.

Springs and Historical Traces

The springs are also part of the area’s history. They were used for the Acquedotto Augusteo (Fontis Augustei Aquæductus), the Acquedotto Sannitico (Acquæductus Abellinum-Beneventum) and the Acquedotto di Serino, inaugurated in 1885. The three names provide specific points of reference for the history of the aqueducts; 1885 adds a clearly stated date for the Acquedotto di Serino.

The Ruderi del Castello Feudale di Serino are believed to date from around 839 AD and to have taken on their present form in 1159. The two dates serve different purposes: around 839 indicates the approximate origin, while 1159 marks its later form. Restoration work at the Parco Archeologico Ambientale Civita di Ogliara revealed towers and a gate. This lets you distinguish the Castello’s history, with its stated dates, from the structural remains in the archaeological park.

Religious Sites in Canale and Cerreto

The Chiesa di San Lorenzo in Località Canale is an 18th-century chapel. The Grotta del SS. Salvatore in Località Cerreto contains stalactites, an altar with an image of the Transfiguration of Jesus, and two wooden statues. The sites offer different points of interest: San Lorenzo stands out for its chapel form and date, while the Grotta is notable for its natural formations and religious furnishings. If you choose cultural sites based on their features, this contrast offers a practical guide.

Hiking, Horseback Riding and Marked Trails

The Parco Faunistico offers opportunities for hiking and horseback riding. Serino also has marked trails that can be used on foot or by bicycle. These include different ways to get around: horseback riding is an option in the Parco Faunistico, while the marked trails can be used for walking and cycling. You can decide based on whether you would like to hike, ride a horse or cycle.

An excursion described in the 2024 visitor program followed the River Sabato to Località Civita, a place rich in history. If you use this route idea when planning your trip, check the trail conditions and signs on site.
