Discover Senerchia: Nature and History
Accommodation in Senerchia
Senerchia appeals to travelers with different interests: mountain trails on Monte Polveracchio, natural features of the WWF Valle della Caccia Oasis, as well as sacred architecture, local history, and traditional festivals. If you are looking for hotels in Senerchia, the reason for your trip can be the deciding factor: hiking and scenery offer a different focus than churches, festival traditions, or the history of the borgo.
Hiking Trails and Nature
Stage SI S08 of the Sentiero Italia CAI leads from Senerchia up the steep eastern slopes of Monte Polveracchio and along numerous switchbacks to the saddle below the summit of Monte Boschetiello. Monte Polveracchio is 1,790 meters high. Check the latest CAI trail information before setting out, as route details may change.
Another way to experience the landscape is along the Sentiero Grotta profunnata: It extends for more than 400 meters in plan view and offers views of the Valle della Caccia on the flank of Monte Polveracchio. The plan-view measurement describes its extent across the ground; it is different from the mountain's elevation. This makes it possible to consider trail length and elevation separately.
The WWF Valle della Caccia Oasis is three kilometers from the center of Senerchia. Its rare plants include Erica terminalis and Acer lobelii. The Grotta del Muschio, a limestone cave in a rock face, is also located within the oasis. The plants, cave, and views of the Valle della Caccia illustrate the area's different natural features.
Churches and Local History
The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. It stands on a rise overlooking much of the Valle del Sele. A bishop's decree dated September 6, 2018, elevated it to the status of a diocesan sanctuary. This status reflects the population's devotion to Saint Michael, attested to over the centuries.
Another sacred landmark is the Cappella della Madonna delle Grazie. It is located in the largest man-made hollow in a rock on Via Vallone, before Senerchia. The rock is next to a small parking area and a fountain.
The oldest part of the Borgo Antico di Senerchia, which developed below the castle, became a ghost village after the earthquake of November 23, 1980. The Ruderi del Castello di Senerchia point to an earlier period in the area's history: The fortress, which already existed, was probably built and expanded by the Lombards and Normans between the 8th and 9th centuries AD. They ruled the fief in succession. The fortress's medieval history and the borgo's transformation after the earthquake thus represent different periods.
Festivals and Getting There
La Sagra del Maiale began in 1989 and has a traditional rural character. The Festa di Sant'Antuono is scheduled for January and honors Saint Anthony the Abbot; bonfires called carcara are lit during the festivities. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates for your chosen travel year.
The nearest railway station to Senerchia is Contursi Terme on the Salerno–Contursi line; daily connections to Salerno are available from there. Train services may change, so check the latest connections before you travel.
