San Sossio Baronia: Heritage and Landscape
Accommodation in San Sossio Baronia
San Sossio Baronia brings together religious buildings and traces of the past in a landscape shaped by hills, springs, fields, and forests. For travelers interested in local history and cultural heritage, the caves of Acqua della Madonna, churches, and other buildings offer a range of points of interest. San Sossio Baronia includes the localities of Turro and Sella Coppola, as well as the Fiumarelle stream.
Cultural history among caves, ruins, and the Via Appia
In the Acqua della Madonna area, there are three caves dug into clay. Their arrangement corresponds to the caves of Saint Joseph, the Madonna, and the Christ Child. In Turro, remains of a Roman bridge can be found along the route of the ancient Via Appia. These two places point to different aspects of local history: the religious associations of the caves and the Roman history of the road.
The former Church of the Annunziata dates back to the 13th century and is now a ruin. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta in Piazza Mercato, in the historic center, has a different building history. It was rebuilt in 1933 on the site of the old Abbatialis church, which dated to the 16th century, after the earthquake of July 23, 1930.
The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo dates back to 1929. Together with its bell tower and the Scala Santa, it forms a religious complex. The church stands at an elevation of 716 meters on a hill above the surrounding area. The municipality’s cultural landmarks therefore include both buildings in the historic center and a church set at its own elevation.
Fountain, cross, and watermill
The Fontana Tre Cannelle was built in 1612 at the behest of Ferdinando Loffredo. Three water spouts are surrounded by masks with different facial expressions. Admission to the Fontana Tre Cannelle is free, and the site is accessible around the clock. Check these access details before your visit.
Crucinova, also known as Croce Nuova, was created in 1611 as a stone cross on a partly fluted column. Four carved angels stand at its base.
The restored historic watermill, Mulino del Ponte, is located near the Fiumarelle stream. There, diverted water powered a mill for grinding grain. A niche beside the mill is a station for pilgrims traveling to the sanctuary on Montemauro. For the feasts on May 8 and September 29, worshippers walked along a country path to the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo.
Landscape and getting there
The municipal area lies between Monte Molara, at 935 meters, and Montuccio, at 827 meters. It includes springs, green hills, cultivated fields and pastures, as well as beech and oak forests. The landscape, along with individual historic buildings, forms part of the municipality’s character: agricultural land, woodland, and mountain ridges sit side by side.
San Sossio Baronia can be reached via the A16 Napoli-Canosa motorway; the listed exits are Grottaminarda and Vallata. From there, take State Road 91 della Valle Sele to the turnoff in the locality of Sella Coppola. This route provides guidance for traveling by car without specifying a particular journey time or distance.
