Nicotera Marina: Beach, Architecture and Tradition
Accommodation in Nicotera Marina
Nicotera Marina combines a seaside stay with a distinctive history of holiday architecture. Spiaggia di Nicotera Marina and the seafront promenade are key considerations when planning a trip; at the same time, the now-closed Villaggio turistico Gioia del Tirreno tells the story of a building and landscape project from 1968 to 1972.
Beach and Promenade
Spiaggia di Nicotera Marina stretches along the Costa degli Dei regional marine park. Nicotera Marina is known for its fine golden sand and turquoise water; however, the named beach also has some sections with pebbles and stones. If you are specifically looking for a stretch of fine sand, take these differences into account when planning your day. The general description of fine golden sand does not mean that every section has the same surface: if the ground is important to your choice, also consider the areas with pebbles and stones.
In 2017, the beach received the Bandiera Verde, an award given by pediatricians to beaches considered especially suitable for children and families. If needed, check whether it is still awarded for your travel dates. The seafront promenade has facilities and offers bars and restaurants. Since these offerings can change, check before your trip whether a particular venue or facility that matters to you is still available.
Gioia del Tirreno: a Closed Holiday Project
The Villaggio turistico Gioia del Tirreno was built between 1968 and 1972; the lead designer was Pierfilippo Cidonio. The complex has been closed since 2011 and should therefore not be planned as an accessible site. A 250-metre-long gallery runs parallel to the beach and separates the complex from the urban settlement.
The landscaping included a double system of sand dunes, which integrated the holiday village areas into a natural-park setting. A pine-covered reforestation strip was also planned on the seaward side. The design elements serve different purposes: the gallery marks the boundary with the urban settlement, the dunes integrate the areas into the natural-park setting, and the pine strip was planned for the seaward side.
Tourist Train Route and December Event
The tourist train route between Nicotera and Nicotera Marina covers approximately 14 kilometres and takes about 60 minutes. At around an hour, the journey takes up a dedicated block of time in your travel plans. The route may be changed in the event of serious traffic problems. If you plan to take it, check in advance whether the train route is currently operating.
Every year on December 8, the procession of the Immaculate Conception takes place in Nicotera Marina. If you are travelling specifically for the procession, keep the date and the schedule in mind separately: it takes place annually on December 8, while the specific arrangements may vary. Find out the details of the event in advance.
