Caulonia combines a historic town center with churches and city gates, religious traditions and a coastal area that appeals to a range of interests. These different highlights can be key when planning a hotel stay: Would you like to explore architectural history, experience a festival or make time for the sea? The places and dates below offer concrete starting points for choosing Caulonia according to your travel interests.

Churches, City Gates and Historic Traces

The Chiesa Matrice di S. Maria Assunta, also known as “La Cattolica,” has medieval origins. At the behest of Vincenzo Carafa, it was rebuilt and expanded between 1513 and 1717. It contains the Renaissance mausoleum of the Carafa family, which is protected as a national monument and attributed to Antonello Gagini. The Campanile Comunale stands directly beside the right-hand façade: a square bell tower with four levels. From the outset, the fiefdom of the Carafa family included the town of Castelvetere, now Caulonia.

The remains of four medieval city gates have been preserved in the historic town center: Porta Pusterla, Porta Amusa, Porta Allaro and Porta del Salvatore. The latter is also known as Porta Reale and was built of sandstone. Emperor Charles V passed through this gate in Caulonia. The Chiesa del SS. Rosario is another notable historic site: it stands on a rocky outcrop with far-reaching views and originally belonged to the Dominican monastery.

The surviving La Deesis is what remains of the Church of San Zaccheria. Created around the year 1000, the depiction features iconography derived from Byzantine models in the Mediterranean region. The route to La Deesis leads from Piazza Carmine into Via Vincenzo Niutta. Historically, Caulonia is also counted among the Greek colonies and subcolonies founded along the Ionian coast of southern Italy. In Caulonia Marina, the Camillari Tower was one of the 72 towers that Fabrizio Pignatelli had built along the Calabrian coast.

Festivals and Religious Traditions

The Kaulonia Tarantella Festival takes place every year in late August in Piazza Mese and is dedicated to Calabrian folk music. The exact dates may vary from year to year; check them if you would like to plan your stay around the festival. This gives you a clearly defined musical focus for your trip.

The festival in honor of the town’s patron saint, Sant’Ilarione, takes place on the third Sunday in October. During the pilgrimage, the saint’s relic is carried to the hermitage in San Nicola; the specific proceedings may vary. Another religious tradition is the Caracle on Holy Saturday: a very long procession whose ritual has been preserved unchanged for centuries by the two archconfraternities involved. The different dates give you a concrete reference point if you would like to plan a stay around a festival.

Hills, Sea and Practical Information

Caulonia Superiore lies on three hills. Narrow streets and squares define the town and resemble terraces overlooking the sea. The Cascate di San Nicola offer a different focus for nature lovers: they are accessible by car, although the final kilometer follows an unpaved but passable road. As road conditions can change, check them before setting out.

The sea off Caulonia is also associated with the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta): after hatching, the species uses the sea off Caulonia to make its way out into the open sea. The Ionian beaches of Caulonia Marina are considered suitable for diving because of the exceptionally good visibility on the seabed. Marina di Caulonia beach is among the child-friendly beaches awarded the Green Flag in connection with the “Riviera dei Gelsomini” Regional Marine Park. As awards and environmental conditions can change, check the latest information before your beach visit.
