Gagliato is a picturesque hilltop village with terraced views of the Sea of Ulysses. The village brings together landscape and local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Gagliato, you can first consider whether historic architecture, hilltop views, or the surrounding landscape will shape your stay most.

History and Architecture

The first documented references to the inhabited settlement of Gagliato date from the second half of the 12th century. The Chiesa di San Nicola was built in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1834 after being damaged by the 1783 earthquake. Its façade is designed in the Baroque style. The church contains several frescoes by the painter Felice Fiori from San Benedetto Ullaro. The building’s construction date, rebuilding history, and frescoes thus bring together different historical and artistic aspects of the church.

The palazzi also showcase different periods and architectural details. Palazzo Sgrò dates from the 17th century and features decorative brick-red areas on its main façade. Palazzo Passafari also dates from the 17th century. Palazzo Garito dates from the 16th century and was the residence of the Marquis Sanchez. Palazzo Nocita Garito is considered a rare example of Liberty-style architecture; it was built in 1920 by Florentine artisans. Compared with the palazzi from the 16th and 17th centuries, this construction date adds a later historical note. Palazzo Pelaggi houses a 19th-century oil mill. The palazzi thus differ not only in their construction dates, but also in their façade design, former use, stylistic classification, and the presence of the oil mill.

The Chiesa di San Nicola brings together a history of construction and rebuilding with its frescoes, while the palazzi offer different points of interest through their façade details, former uses, style, and oil mill.

Landscape and Recent Local History

The Ancinale River runs through Gagliato and offers the village and its visitors impressive nature trails. Alongside the buildings, the landscape is therefore another point of interest during a stay. In 2005, Gagliato became the home of NanoGagliato. This event adds a more recent reference in local history to the older construction dates.
