Copanello combines a town divided into two areas with a distinctive rocky landscape and historic sites. For planning your trip, there are several themes to choose from: the shapes of the seabed, the Vasche di Cassiodoro, and routes to the historic center of Stalettì. If you are looking for a hotel in Copanello, these landscape and history themes can shape the focus of your stay.

Copanello between Lido, Alta, and the Rocky Coast

Copanello is divided into two areas: Copanello Lido and Copanello Alta. The Fondali di Stalettì marine protected area lies off the rocky headland. It covers seabed between the 5- and 30-meter depth contours. The rocky terrain forms small headlands, coves, islets, and cliffs. One bay in the area is also rich in caves, coves, and archaeological remains. The two parts of the town provide orientation on land; the shapes of the seabed describe a distinct part of the coastal landscape. In Copanello, the layout of the town and a varied rocky landscape sit side by side.

The Vasche di Cassiodoro: Coastal Site and History

The Vasche di Cassiodoro in Copanello are fish-farming tanks carved into the rock. Seawater is naturally renewed through narrow openings. The site offers a direct way to understand its historic use: fish-farming tanks in the rock, connected to the natural exchange of seawater. The Vasche were part of the Vivarium complex. It also included the so-called Villa degli Aurelii, an estate belonging to Cassiodorus’s family from the Roman imperial period.

At the Vasche di Cassiodoro, visitors can swim between granite rocks and in the clear water in front of the cliff. As sea conditions can vary, please take them into account when deciding whether to swim. Fish farming and swimming are thus two distinct aspects of this coastal site: the tanks’ former function and the described use of the water.

Historic Traces on the Way to Stalettì

Another place associated with the Cassiodorus tradition is Coscia di Stalettì. In the village near the resort town of Copanello is the historic Arethusa spring, also known as Fonte di Cassiodoro. It is associated with the Cassiodorus tradition. Its location helps distinguish the spring from the Vasche, despite their shared Cassiodorus connections: the spring is in Coscia di Stalettì, while the tanks are in Copanello.

The current route of Via Grande starts in Copanello Lido, near the bridge over the Alessi River, and climbs uphill to the historic center of Stalettì. Casino Pepe provides another point of reference along the route: on the historic sightseeing route from Copanello to the center stands the old fortified residence of the Lucifero family. Casino Pepe is a significant example of fortified residential architecture. The term brings together two features of the building: it is described as a residence and also identified as fortified.

From a Local Route to a Longer Hiking Trail

The Cammino di Cassiodoro is on a different scale: an approximately 52-kilometer archaeological hiking trail with historical, religious, and natural history themes. It is divided into three main stages and extends along the Ionian coast and through the inland hill country of the municipalities of Borgia, Squillace, and Stalettì. The two routes therefore offer different kinds of orientation: Via Grande has a specified start and destination in Stalettì, while the Cammino is outlined by its approximate total length, stages, and the areas of several municipalities. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between a specifically described local route and a longer hiking trail.
