Discover Badolato: Heritage, Coast and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Badolato
Badolato is a medieval village in the hills, about 240 metres above sea level. From here, you can enjoy views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding coast; narrow, cobbled streets shape the village’s character. When planning your trip, you can focus on different themes: local history and sacred art, experiences by the sea, or trails in nature.
Village, Coast and Trails
Badolato is home to the Le Bocche di Gallipari marina. At Spiaggia di Badolato Marina, possible activities include water sports, boat trips and days swimming by the sea. If you are planning a boat trip, check the specific booking options in advance. This lets you plan the coastal part of your stay with a clear focus, without conflating it with sightseeing in the village.
Trekking is another option: in Badolato, you can follow old paths and nature trails towards the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Serre Calabresi. The Sentiero della Memoria Popolare offers a different way to explore local history. This “pietre parlanti” (talking stones) walk shares local stories, characters and folk anecdotes. While the nature trails draw your attention to the surrounding landscape, this walk centres on local storytelling traditions.
Churches and Works of Art
The present structure of the Chiesa Matrice del SS.mo Salvatore dates back to 1612. The church houses a wooden bust of Sant’Andrea Avellino, Badolato’s patron saint. The work, from the Neapolitan school, dates to the first half of the 17th century. Palazzo Gallelli adds another perspective on the area’s history: this three-storey residential building dates back to 1598.
Several churches preserve art from different periods. The Chiesa di Santa Caterina V.M. d’Alessandria contains a 16th-century fresco and an altarpiece depicting the mystical marriage of Saint Catherine to the Christ Child. The Chiesa e Convento Madonna degli Angeli houses a wooden group of figures depicting the Madonna degli Angeli, by Fra Diego da Careri.
The frescoes at San Domenico are also worth including in your sightseeing itinerary. The Chiesa di San Domenico, formerly called Santa Maria del Soccorso and “Do Monasteri,” preserves vault frescoes attributed to Flemish painter Guglielmo Borremans and dated to around 1730. The Chiesa di San Domenico “U Monasteri” also preserves old frescoes by Calabrian painter Francesco Colelli. The 17th-century Chiesa dell’Immacolata, together with the Convento degli Angeli, is considered one of the area’s most important religious buildings. The Santuario Basiliano della Madonna della Sanità dates back to the 11th century; the Chiesa e Convento Francescano di Santa Maria degli Angeli is dated to 1603/1605.
Badolato’s sights also include the Torre Campanaria di avvistamento, built in 1539. If you are interested in religious architecture, you can combine it with the churches, their preserved works of art and the historic Palazzo Gallelli for a cultural and historical itinerary.
Festivals and Seasonal Experiences
Every year, the Confraternita dell’Immacolata Concezione organises three religious events: a performance on Holy Saturday featuring several hundred “figurants,” as well as processions for Maria Santissima Assunta on 15 August and the Immacolata Concezione on 8 December. Dates and arrangements may change; check the latest programme before your visit.
During the traditional grape harvest, communal harvests are offered, with tours of the traditional Catoj. During the olive harvest, experiences include tours of local olive mills with tastings of extra virgin olive oil. There are also cooking classes, with lessons in Italian and the Badolato dialect. These activities require specific dates: ask about availability for your chosen travel period in advance.
