Lake, Forest and Rocky Landscape
Lago della Duglia lies at an altitude of 1,375 metres at the foot of Serra di Crispo, surrounded by beech and silver fir forests. Timpa Falconara is an impressive rock face that dominates the valley landscape. Timpa di Pietrasasso adds a different geological formation: the 1,362-metre-high serpentinite or ophiolitic rock spur rises more than 50 metres.
Timpa delle Murge is also characterised by its geology. It reaches 1,441 metres and consists of basalt rock formed when magma emerged from the depths of the sea. Large boulders and giant beech trees, several centuries old, shape the landscape at Catusa spring. Lake, forest, spring and rock formations each add their own distinctive character to the natural attractions around Terranova di Pollino.
Traditions and Historic Sites
Carnival is one of the typical traditions of Terranova di Pollino. The town’s religious history includes the Church of San Francesco di Paola and the Sanctuary of Madonna di Pietà . The church retains its original main portal, made of laurel pine wood. It also houses a 16th-century painting by Attilio De Laurentis depicting Madonna delle Grazie and Saints Charles Borromeo and Francis of Assisi.
The Sanctuary of Madonna di Pietà dates back to the 16th century, was rebuilt in the 20th century and later restored again. At Palazzo Rusciani, the beautiful interior staircase stands out in particular. Together, these places reveal different aspects of the area’s cultural heritage: religious architectural history, a historic painting, an architectural feature and a living local tradition.
