Art, historic buildings and landscape give Moliterno several clearly distinct facets. The town is located in the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Lucano Val D’Agri Lagonegrese; its museums and churches offer different points of entry into art and regional history. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can shape your choice of destination: would you rather focus on collections and architecture, or would you also like to take the designated woodland landscape into account?

Art and Regional Collections

The Museo del Paesaggio presents landscape art from the 18th century to the present day. This long time span is a useful reference if you are interested in different depictions of landscapes. Nearby, the Museo di Arte Contemporanea is housed in a historic residence in the Castello district. This brings together two distinct points of interest: the broad time span of landscape art and the historic character of the building that houses the museum.

The Museo Michele Tedesco e dell’Ottocento Lucano displays works and artists’ notebooks by Michele Tedesco. The works and notebooks form distinct parts of the collection, both connected to the same artist. The Biblioteca Lucana Angela Aiello offers a regional perspective: it holds books and prints about Basilicata from the 17th century to the present day. Its map room contains a map dating from 1620. This single, early-dated reference point is part of a collection that spans a period extending to the present day. The Museo della Ceramica adds another dimension to this range, with a section on 20th-century Vietri ceramics.

Churches and Traces of History

The churches can also be distinguished by their construction dates and features. The Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria Assunta was built between the 12th and 13th centuries; its baptistery is dated 1617. The Chiesa domenicana del Rosario was built in 1510 and renovated in 1616. It has three naves with frescoed vaults. The former monastery of this church preserves a cloister with a well and a stone washbasin. Taken together, these details offer a concrete comparison, ranging from construction periods to individual rooms and architectural features.

The Franciscan church, Chiesa di Santa Croce, dates from 1613 and contains Baroque wooden altars. Much earlier evidence is found at Murgia Sant’Angelo: archaeological remains there date from the Bronze Age, between the 15th and 14th centuries BC. The sanctuary of Santa Maria di Vetere lies 3 kilometres from Moliterno and contains frescoes dating from the 14th to the 16th centuries.

The Faggeta di Moliterno and Its Location

The Faggeta di Moliterno is designated as a Zona Speciale di Conservazione (ZSC). It covers about 350 hectares on the northeastern slopes of Monte Calvarosa, which rises to 1,261 metres. Its area, position on the slopes and the mountain’s elevation describe the woodland landscape from different spatial perspectives. When choosing your destination, you can thus set Moliterno’s cultural side alongside a natural landscape with a clearly defined location.

Events as an Additional Reason to Visit

Moles Aeterna is an international series of events organised by the Moliterno folklore group U Cirnicchiu. The patron-saint festival of San Domenico, San Cristoforo and San Nicola takes place on 4 August; if you are planning your trip around it, check the local programme. A 2025 regional report describes the Sagra del Canestrato IGP di Moliterno as taking place annually on 9 and 10 August. Check the event dates before your trip if you would like to plan around this occasion.
