Banzi brings together a sacred history dating back to the early Middle Ages, Roman archaeological sites and literary references to Horace. It also offers a clearly defined route and events with different dates. If you are looking for a hotel in Banzi, you can plan your trip according to whether your main interest is history, archaeology or a particular event date.

Landscape and the Fons Bandusia Route

Banzi sits on a hill overlooking the Fiumarella stream in the upper Bradano Valley. The Fons Bandusia route (BNZ-02) runs through Banzi from the Grotte Banzullo to Nocellaro. There is a large car park at the starting point by the Grotte Banzullo, with space for about ten cars. The town’s setting and a clearly described route with two named endpoints offer distinct points of reference for planning your trip.

Church, Abbey and Historical Records

The Church of Santa Maria in Banzi was built in 797. The first document attesting to the existence of the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria dates from the late 8th or early 9th century; its remains lie in the centre of the present-day built-up area. The church’s construction date and the abbey’s first documented mention are distinct historical reference points, both dating to the early Middle Ages.

The Auguraculum in Banzi was used to interpret divine signs by observing birds and/or lightning. It is considered the only evidence in the Latin world of a temple dedicated to divination. Banzi is also associated with the Fons Bandusiae, celebrated by Horace in Ode III.13; the exact location of the spring is disputed. The Tabula Bantina was also found in Banzi. These topics range from religious interpretation and literary tradition to an archaeological find with a specific connection to the town.

Archaeological Traces at Orto dei Monaci

The Orto dei Monaci archaeological site lies next to the Abbey of Santa Maria in Banzi. The site contains the remains of imposing Roman public baths, which went through several construction phases. A severe fire destroyed the baths and led to their permanent abandonment. The sequence of multiple construction phases followed by destruction makes the history of this complex a distinct part of Banzi’s archaeological record.

Excavations also uncovered the remains of a Roman domus dating to around the 1st century BC. A mosaic inscription from the Julio-Claudian period of use refers to Romanius of the Camilia tribe, a sacerdos who is believed to have commissioned the mosaic. A large necropolis was also excavated in Contrada Piano Carbone, southwest of the modern town centre. The Roman finds therefore span distinct contexts: public baths, a residence and a necropolis.

Events and When to Visit

Every August, Banzi stages a traditional historical reenactment of the arrival of Pope Urban II. In the 2025 edition, ladies, knights, dignitaries, armed men and townspeople brought the streets of the historic centre to life as a vivid medieval tableau. The Sagra del peperone crusco, held in recent years, took place on the streets of the historic centre during the first week of September; its dates may vary from one edition to the next. So if you are planning your trip around the Sagra, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Another dated event was the “6 ORE DEI TEMPLARI – Memorial Vito Frangione” ultramarathon, held in Banzi on April 26, 2025; this was its 14th edition. Event dates are therefore clearly distinct from the historical and archaeological themes that define Banzi regardless of any particular festival date.
