In Torre Columena, coastal landscapes, protected natural areas and cultural heritage come together to appeal to different travel interests. The transition between sand and rock, the distinct protected areas, and the coastal tower with its ceramics museum each give these attractions a tangible point of reference.

Coastline Between Sand and Rock

Torre Colimena has a public beach with soft sand. Near the tower, the sand gives way to rugged rocks. The coastline therefore includes both a sandy beach and rocky areas near the tower. If the landscape is a particular priority for your trip, this contrast is a concrete difference to consider when choosing your destination.

Nature Park, Salt Pans and Dunes

The bay of Torre Colimena is located in the “Palude del Conte e Dune Costiere” nature park. The Riserve Naturali Regionali Orientate del Litorale Tarantino Orientale cover 1,113 hectares and consist of two separate areas. The second part includes the coastal areas of the Torre Colimena salt pans and dunes. The 1,113 hectares refers to the reserves as a whole; the coastal areas mentioned are specifically part of the second area. This distinguishes the total area from the specific location of the salt pans and dunes.

The Salina dei Monaci is connected to the sea by a channel that allows water to flow between them. While the information about the reserves describes their area and divisions, the channel provides a specific connection with the sea.

Coastal Tower and Ceramics Museum

Torre Colimena is part of the coastal tower defense system commissioned by Emperor Charles V. The system was intended to protect the Salento Peninsula from frequent foreign incursions. The commission and purpose of protection relate to the system and the peninsula; the individual tower is part of this broader historical context.

Since summer 2021, the Museo delle Ceramiche has been housed inside Torre Colimena. This brings together the history of defense and the theme of ceramics in one building. If either subject interests you, you can include the tower as a historical attraction and the museum as a distinct cultural point of interest in your travel plans.

Guided Tours on a Seasonal Schedule

Guided tours are available at Torre Colimena and the Museo delle Ceramiche “Cheramo e Bacco.” The seasonal schedule lists tours in July on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., and in August on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, also from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Three days of the week are listed for July and four for August; the daily time slot remains the same.
