Roccaforzata lies on a hill 140 metres high, the highest point of Monte Sant’Elia. The historic centre sits on the edge of a steep escarpment, around the fortified residence of Il Castello. Its elevation and residence give the centre a distinctive setting. Those choosing Roccaforzata for a stay will find several layers of history: a feudal residence, traces of ancient settlements and religious sites. Viewpoints add landscape views to this historical focus.

Il Castello: Architecture and History

Il Castello has a rectangular ground plan and an east-facing façade. Its appearance is typical of a feudal residence from the 15th and 16th centuries. The ground plan and the orientation of the façade are two different features: the former describes the shape, while the latter indicates the direction of the front. Part of the complex dates from 1407. At that time, the feudal lord hosted the King of Naples, Ladislao d’Angiò Durazzo. The occasion was the king’s wedding to Maria d’Enghien. Architecture and history thus offer different points of emphasis: the building’s design and this episode tell different sides of the residence’s story.

A Long History of Settlement on Monte Sant’Elia

The history of Monte Sant’Elia goes back long before the Castello was built. The mountain was inhabited by an Iapygian settlement, with a probable defensive structure, from at least the 8th century BC. From the 7th century BC, a settlement developed there that was probably connected with the territory of the Greek colony of Taranto. Between the 6th and 4th centuries BC, the settlement was given a defensive wall, two sections of which have been excavated. This chronology runs from Iapygian settlement through the possible connection with Taranto to the excavated wall sections. These ancient links give Monte Sant’Elia a markedly different time horizon from that of the feudal residence.

Religious Sites and Their Significance

Religious sites add their own cultural associations to the history of buildings and settlement. The Chiesa di San Nicola has been mentioned since 1578, when Monsignor Brancaccio visited the church. The Santuario della Madonna della Camera is held in special reverence by the people of Roccaforzata. For San Nicola, a specific historical date is the main focus; for the Santuario, it is the site’s particular religious significance to the local population.

Views and Quiet Relaxation

The Loggia Belvedere is a viewpoint overlooking the surrounding landscapes and the Apulian countryside. The Parco Pubblico Monte della Croce is a scenic green space in Roccaforzata, offering visitors a place for quiet reflection and relaxation. The two sites have different emphases: the Loggia directs the eye towards the landscape, while the park combines views with peace and relaxation. This gives you a practical choice if, alongside the historical sights, you would like to choose between landscape views and quiet relaxation.
