Leporano brings together local history and coastal themes with archaeology, wine experiences, and patron-saint traditions. When looking for a hotel in Leporano, these varied highlights can help guide your choice: would you rather explore the history of historic buildings, discover Saturo across a long span of time, or plan a specific wine experience?

Castello Muscettola and the History of Fortifications

Castello Muscettola is located in the historic centre of Leporano. For centuries, it was a symbol of the feudal power of numerous noble families. Its original core dates from the 12th to 13th century and includes the base of the main tower, which was intended at the time to serve as a Swabian watchtower. This makes it possible to distinguish the early building history from its later development into a residential palace.

The walls of the castle were built in the 16th century. In the following century, the defensive fortress was transformed into a residential palace, and a small church and a viewing terrace were added. The building history therefore encompasses both an early structure centred on a watchtower and the later transformation and expansion of the complex.

Batteria Cattaneo offers a different historical focus. The old coastal fortification in Leporano was built to protect the area from attacks from the sea. While Castello Muscettola is associated with centuries of feudal power and its transformation into a residential palace, Batteria Cattaneo is linked to coastal defence. This difference helps distinguish the two buildings according to their respective documented functions.

Saturo and the Coast

The Parco Archeologico di Saturo is located on a coastal promontory between the bays of Porto Saturo and Porto Perone. Two routes there trace the history of Saturo, from the 2nd millennium BC to modern-day interventions. This time span therefore reaches far beyond any single historical period. Torre Saturo is now part of the Parco Archeologico di Saturo-Porto Perone.

The coastal locations also offer a range of different activities. The Bay of Lido Gandoli is part of the Leporano coastline. At Porto Pirrone, you can go diving or take a pedal boat ride. If you plan to take part in either activity, check availability beforehand: local providers and offers may change.

Festa Patronale di Sant’Emidio

The Festa Patronale di Sant’Emidio patron-saint festival was established in 1794 and is celebrated in Leporano on 4, 5, and 12 August. Its events include a novena, the handing over of the city keys, and processions with the image of the saint. The festival thus includes religious celebrations as well as the symbolic handover of the keys and processions. If you would like to include the festival dates in your travel plans, check the programme for the relevant year.
