Racale: History, Coastal Landscapes and Nature
Accommodation in Racale
Racale brings together historic buildings and archaeological remains with nature and coastal features. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can start by considering whether churches and architecture, traces of earlier uses, or landscapes and botanical features will shape your itinerary. The sites also span different periods: medieval and later-decorated churches sit alongside archaeological remains, coastal flora, and a cycling and walking path.
Castle and Churches from Different Periods
The oldest surviving part of the Castello Baronale is attributed to Puccio Tolomei, who probably had the castle built. At the same time, the building retains an old square layout with four-sided towers. The attribution points to a possible history of its origins; the layout and towers give the complex a clearly recognizable architectural form. Parking is available near the Castello Baronale. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting conditions.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria la Nova and the former Benedictine monastery beside it date from between the late 11th and early 12th centuries. The Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria de' Paradiso was probably built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Medieval remains here combine with 18th-century stucco work, Baroque paintings, and marble altars. Its façade is made entirely of Lecce stone; a 16th-century bell tower stands beside it. These specific buildings reveal distinct historical layers: early foundations, later artistic embellishments, and individual architectural additions.
Archaeological Remains and Earlier Uses
The Dolmen Ospina consists of large limestone slabs arranged along a rectangular plan. It is located in Contrada Ospina on Strada Provinciale 222 in Racale, 73055. This location helps you identify the dolmen precisely when planning a visit. The Menhir Castelforte can be visited in the Villaggio di Castelforte, which lies on the border between Racale and Taviano.
Caseddhi offer a glimpse into how the land was used at different times of year: in winter, they served as storage for agricultural tools; in summer, as accommodation for families working in the fields. The Torre di Torre Suda served a different historic function. It was part of the defensive system used to monitor the coast and protect the hinterland. Together, these sites illustrate everything from the form of an archaeological monument to seasonal everyday uses and coastal defence.
Specchia and Coastal Flora
The Specchia Li Specchi is a semi-conical mound of stones associated with the historic observation of the area and coastline. From here, the view extends from Gallipoli to Marina di Alliste and across the Racale plain. Landscape and history come together here: the Specchia is both a distinctive stone structure and a site associated with observing the surrounding area.
At the Gariga Costiera in Torre Suda, coastal flora includes salt-tolerant plants and Mediterranean scrub that form a garigue. Torre Suda is also home to the rare Salento endemic plant Anthyllis hermanniae. For nature enthusiasts, the focus is therefore on a vegetation type and a specifically named plant species. Both relate to Torre Suda, while the Specchia offers a separate vantage point over the landscape.
Cycling and Walking Path and Local Information
A cycling and walking path runs along the waterfront road in Torre Suda, Marina di Racale, connecting the local communities as far as Torre San Giovanni. Unlike the individual sights, this path links places and is well suited to travellers who would also like to explore the coast on foot or by bike during their stay.
I.A.T. Racale and Pro Loco provide information about local historical and artistic tours, events, exhibitions, and visits and excursions organized on site. If you would like to add a guided tour or event to your stay, you can contact them for current dates and organizational details.
