Poggiardo can be explored from various perspectives: the Chiesa Matrice di San Salvatore and Palazzo Guarini tell the story of religious and aristocratic architecture, Vaste is known for its evidence of Messapian culture, and the woods, caves and red earth around the Pineta dei Marirossi shape the natural landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Poggiardo, you can use these themes to help plan your trip.

Churches, Crypt and Palazzo Guarini

The Chiesa Matrice di San Salvatore is the oldest religious building in Poggiardo. Its origins date back at least to the 14th century; in the 18th century, its façade was given a typically Baroque style. Its layout can also be described precisely: the single-nave hall has the shape of a Latin cross and three deep chapels. Frescoes and Baroque stucco work adorn the ceiling.

Palazzo Guarini represents a different development. It was first built in the mid-14th century as a military building with primarily defensive and surveillance functions; a large round tower is one of its defining features. In the 15th century, the fortified complex was gradually transformed into a splendid aristocratic residence. The former moat was filled in and turned into a citrus grove. Small towers known as “Sentinelle” also shape the townscape around Piazza Episcopo.

The Cripta di Santa Maria degli Angeli is one of Poggiardo’s oldest monuments. In early times, the old settlement developed around it. The crypt is also an example of the underground churches and crypts characteristic of the Salento area around Otranto. It is in the town centre, beneath Via Don Minzoni, near the Chiesa Madre and Palazzo Ducale dei Guarini. Check local access conditions before visiting.

Messapian Evidence in Vaste

Vaste is a district of Poggiardo and an important archaeological site that bears witness to the Messapian civilization. The Parco dei Guerrieri di Vaste covers more than 20 hectares, stretching from the settlement of Vaste to the Serre hills of Poggiardo. At the entrance, it features faithful reproductions of the Ipogeo delle Cariatidi; from the terrace, you can view the remains of the ancient defensive wall.

The Museo Archeologico della Civiltà Messapica is located in Vaste, in Piazza Dante, inside the 16th-century Palazzo Baronale. The exhibition follows a chronological path from places of worship of the Archaic and Hellenistic periods through to the Middle Ages. Thus, Vaste’s archaeological evidence takes centre stage, while the church and Palazzo Guarini illustrate other chapters in Poggiardo’s history.

Pine Forest, Caves and Landscape

The Pineta dei Marirossi is a 16-hectare man-made forest with numerous caves. Pine and olive trees grow there alongside wild orchids. The reddish colour of the soil is largely due to rich bauxite deposits, which are no longer mined. Both the vegetation and the geological features are defining characteristics of this landscape.

A path begins northwest of the Pineta, connecting natural landscapes with traces of industrial archaeology and leading to the Querceto dei Reali. Check the trail conditions locally. The Grotta Marirossi, also known as the “Grotta che respira,” has a distinctive feature: a continuous airflow at its entrance. Check locally whether the cave can be visited.

Another landscape can be found at Villa Episcopo, with a garden, small paths, numerous plants typical of the Mediterranean region and small, picturesque caves. The Pineta, the cave and the garden therefore differ considerably in their described features: from woodland and soil colour to the airflow at the cave entrance and the plants and paths in the garden.
