Discover Merine: Church Art and Festival Tradition
Accommodation in Merine
Merine offers travelers several distinct cultural highlights: a neoclassical main church, a 15th-century chapel, a monument in the middle of the main square, and a grain festival tradition. If you are looking for hotels in Merine, considering whether you are especially interested in church art, local history, or a festival can help you get a sense of the place. This can help you decide whether Merine suits your travel interests.
Churches and sacred art
The Chiesa di S. Maria delle Grazie is Merine’s main church. Its façade is neoclassical and made of Lecce stone; it also has a clock tower.
The church houses several works of art. These include a 17th-century wooden tabernacle, a work by Fra Giuseppe da Soleto. The small organ, dating from 1783, was made by Francesco Giovannelli. There is also a work by Francesco De Matteis from 1587. Another 18th-century work was created by Pietro Surgente of Lecce; it depicts Christ as the Man of Sorrows. The name “Christ as the Man of Sorrows” identifies the subject depicted in this work, adding its visual content to the information about the artist and date.
Chapel and townscape
The Cappella di Maria Santissima Assunta is also known as Chiesa vecchia or Chiesa di San Vito; all three names refer to the same chapel. It dates from the 15th century and is considered the oldest place of worship in Merine. Inside, it preserves frescoes reminiscent of those in the Basilica di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria in Galatina.
Lu Sanna stands in the middle of the main square. The monolithic column is topped by a small statue of the Madonna Assunta. Monolithic means that the column is made from a single stone; the statue adds a distinct religious motif.
The historic center includes small rural houses built of irregular masonry. Thus, alongside the individual works in the churches, the construction style of the houses is also part of the townscape. The term “irregular masonry” draws attention to how the stones are laid and adds to the impression created by the named works of art and buildings.
Festival tradition and planning
The Sagra te lu Ranu is a recurring festival in Merine. It centers on grain and the region’s agricultural tradition and has community significance. In July 2026, the municipality announced the 32nd edition. If you want to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates for the edition relevant to your trip in advance.
The Biblioteca Comunale Carmine Cucugliato is located in the Palazzo Baronale Palmieri-Majola in Merine. If the library is part of your travel plans, check its service information before your trip.
