Cutrofiano brings together a continuously practised ceramics tradition, church and crypt architecture, and the geological layers of the Parco dei Fossili. The Museo della Ceramica adds themed visits, educational workshops and tours between the museum and the town. The focus therefore ranges from crafts to religious buildings and the landscape.

Ceramics between craftsmanship and local history

The ceramics craft in Cutrofiano has been documented since the Middle Ages and continues to be practised without interruption today. Official recognition also has a legal basis: under Law No. 188/90, Cutrofiano is among the areas with recognised ceramics production. On 15 December 2022, the Consiglio Nazionale Ceramico issued a positive opinion on the matter.

The Museo della Ceramica di Cutrofiano offers themed visits, accessible educational workshops and tours that connect the museum and the town. The tours explicitly include the town, while the workshops have an educational focus. For a specific date, please check which activities are currently on offer, as the programme may change.

Named kilns are also among the town’s ceramics and archaeological points of interest. The Fornace romana in Contrada Scacciato is circular and carved into the rock. The wood-fired kiln Fornace a legna Colì on Via Roma probably dates from the early 20th century or even the century before. One description focuses on the structure and rock, while the other highlights the wood-fired kiln and an explicitly uncertain date.

Churches, crypts and rock-cut architecture

The Church of San Giovanni Battista was built in the 17th century on the site of an earlier church that collapsed in 1607. The Crypt of San Giovanni Battista is entirely carved into the rock and can be reached by a series of steps cut into the stone.

The crypt in Località San Giovanni Piscopìo has an approximately circular floor plan and a central column that supports its vault. An approximately circular floor plan describes the shape of the space when viewed from above; the column supports the vault at its centre. Traces on the entrance jambs indicate that the interior walls were originally frescoed.

Fossils and geological layers

The Parco dei Fossili has a geological focus: its layers contain well-preserved fossils, and signs along the path explain the geological period of each layer. If you would like to include landscape history in your stay as well as ceramics, the park offers a different perspective on Cutrofiano, focusing on rock strata, fossils and their geological classification.
