Campi Salentina – Culture and History in Salento
Accommodation in Campi Salentina
Campi Salentina lies in the Piana di Lecce, a gently depressed landscape within the Salento plain. Vineyards and olive groves shape the surrounding countryside; villas and masserie illustrate the rural architecture typical of Salento. In the historic centre, you will find lanes, courtyards and Baroque churches. When planning your trip, both the cultural landscape and the town’s architectural history take centre stage.
Rural Architecture and the Historic Centre
The villas and masserie are part of the surrounding landscape and showcase a rural building style typical of Salento. In the centre, the lanes and courtyards offer a different architectural point of reference, while Baroque churches add to the townscape. If you are interested in architecture, you can explore these different themes side by side in Campi Salentina without reducing them to a single period.
Palazzo Marchesale is a striking example of the town’s history. The former castle was converted into a palazzo under the Enriquez family. The building is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. Your visit is therefore limited to the exterior architecture; do not plan to visit the interiors.
The Centro culturale Casa Prato-Calabrese also has distinctive architectural features: it has a courtyard layout common in Salento and is considered an example of the persistence of Greek-Latin traditions in 16th-century architecture. This provides an opportunity to compare Palazzo Marchesale, with its history as a former castle, with the cultural centre’s courtyard layout.
Museo Pompiliano and San Pompilio
Since 1990, the Piarists of Campi Salentina have promoted the establishment of Museo Pompiliano as a vivid portrayal of the history of San Pompilio. Most of the collection consists of the saint’s personal effects, everyday objects and clothing, as well as sacred relics. It also includes paintings by well-known artists, papier-mâché figures depicting San Pompilio, sculptures and important documents relating to his canonisation. Check the current opening hours in advance before visiting the museum.
San Pompilio also features in the festival calendar: on 14 and 15 July, the Festa di San Pompilio includes the blessing of San Pompilio bread and a traditional procession. If you are learning about the saint and his history, you can experience the museum and the religious celebration as different aspects of local life.
Festivals Throughout the Year
The Fiera Madonna della Mercede takes place every year in October. Its focus is agriculture, livestock farming and local crafts. The Festa di Sant'Oronzo is celebrated annually from late August to early September with processions, Masses, concerts and performances. The two festivals therefore differ both in timing and focus: the Fiera centres on agriculture and crafts, while Sant'Oronzo combines religious celebrations with performances.
La CittĂ del Libro is held every November as an annual publishing event. Together with the festivals in July, from late August to early September and in October, it makes for a calendar featuring several distinct cultural events. Specific dates and programmes may vary; check the details for the relevant edition before your trip.
Madonna dell'Alto and the Surrounding Area
The Madonna dell'Alto chapel is located on Sant'Elia hill, about eight kilometres from the built-up area of Campi Salentina. The church can be reached via the Campi–Cellino provincial road and, from kilometre 5, along a farm track belonging to the former Masseria Pizzuti. Check local access conditions before your visit. The approximate distance is measured from the built-up area, not from a specific starting point.
The surrounding area is also home to Menhir Candido, cited as an archaeological and rural landmark. If you are interested in cultural heritage beyond the historic centre when choosing your destination, Campi Salentina offers a range of themes: rural architecture, religious history, recurring festivals and individual landmarks in the surrounding area.
