San Menaio between the coast and cultural landscape

San Menaio brings together several features that may carry different weight when choosing a destination: a long coastal beach, the Pineta Marzini pine forest and cultural heritage sites such as the archaeological area of Macchia di Mare. If you are looking for a hotel in San Menaio, you can first consider whether the beach and coastline, nature or cultural history are most important for your stay. The following features provide concrete points of reference.

Beach sections and coastline

San Menaio’s long, almost straight beach has numerous beach resorts interspersed with free beach sections. The gently sloping seabed makes it suitable for families with children; conditions may vary seasonally. Near Macchia di Mare, the coastline changes: San Menaio’s beach gives way to a pebble beach and then to a high cliff-lined coast. Thus, the long, almost straight beach and the sequence of beach, pebbles and cliffs represent different coastal landscapes.

Inflatable boats and canoes can be rented at the far end of San Menaio beach. This section leads into Spiaggia dei Cento Scalini, also known as delle Tufare. Rental availability may vary by season and operator; check before your visit whether it is available at that time.

Pineta Marzini and the hilly landscape

The Pineta Marzini is one of the few Italian pine forests described as genetically pure. Aleppo pines make up a large proportion of the forest; holm oaks are also found there. Along the country roads leading from the seafront up into the hills towards San Menaio, you can see extensive orange and lemon groves. If you would also like to take forests and agricultural landscapes into account when choosing your destination, these features add to the picture of San Menaio beyond its coastline.

Cultural traces and landscape protection

San Menaio’s cultural heritage includes the archaeological area of Macchia di Mare. The archaeological settlement there is a Neolithic village of huts dating from the 4th to 3rd millennium BC. The Torre dei Preposti offers a different cultural-historical reference: its name refers to the tower’s original customs function. A prehistoric settlement and the function reflected in the tower’s name thus represent different historical points of reference.

Under the Landscape Protection Act of 29 June 1939, No. 1497, San Menaio is recognized as an area of considerable public interest. This recognition is documented in a decree published on 6 February 1986. The two dates refer to different things: 1939 is the date of the act, and 1986 the publication date of the decree.

Train station and seasonal planning

Vico San Menaio train station may also be relevant when planning your trip. The 2026 passenger service information states that the station has step-free access to the first platform, without architectural barriers. For July and August 2026, the service also included a ticket office. If you are planning to use the station on a later trip, check in advance whether the ticket office will be open during your travel period.
