San Marco La Catola: History, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in San Marco La Catola
San Marco La Catola lies at an altitude of over 600 meters and is one of the highest villages in Apulia. History and culture are the main features that shape the town for visitors: the well-preserved historic center, religious buildings and Palazzo Ducale offer different ways to explore the town’s past. Bosco San Cristoforo and stage SI Q01 of the Sentiero Italia add a woodland area and a specific route to the mix. You can shape your stay around cultural history, scenery or a stage outdoors.
Historic Center and Religious Buildings
The so-called c’nant, narrow lanes with steep steps, define the well-preserved historic center. The oldest part of town developed around Palazzo Ducale. Locally, the building is called a castle, but it is actually a ducal palace. The distinction between its local name and its architectural classification makes the town’s history tangible in a specific building.
The present-day Chiesa parrocchiale di San Nicola di Mira was completed in 1611, replacing the former parish church of San Giacomo, which stood on the site of today’s town hall. This allows you to distinguish two stages in the parish’s history: its former location on the site of the present-day town hall and the current church. San Nicola di Mira also preserves a valuable collection of religious vestments donated by the Pignatelli family. The church’s construction history and the donation thus represent different aspects of the town’s religious heritage.
Palazzo Ducale houses the original chapel dedicated to Saint Mark the Evangelist. Its original entrance portal is decorated. The Santuario della Madonna di Josafat preserves a different form of religious art: a Byzantine-style wooden bas-relief depicting the Madonna di Giosafat. A dated biographical connection is also part of the sanctuary’s history. San Pio stayed briefly at the Santuario’s monastery in 1904, when he was still a theology student.
Woodland, Hiking Stage and Getting There
Bosco San Cristoforo offers another way to explore the landscape. The woodland covers about 300 hectares and is predominantly made up of downy oak. Its size and tree species are two specific points to consider if you would like to include a woodland area in your travel plans alongside the historic buildings.
Stage SI Q01 of the Sentiero Italia descends from San Marco La Catola to the La Catola River. It then follows the Tratturo Castel di Sangro-Lucera to the historic Ponte dei Tredici Archi before continuing into Molise. If you are planning this route, check the trail conditions and signposting before setting out.
