Accadia: Cultural History and Nature
Accommodation in Accadia
Accadia can be explored for travel planning through two distinct interests: cultural history and nature. The historical side centres on the uninhabited medieval town centre of Rione Fossi, the Museo delle Origini (MOA) and the monumental fountain. Nature takes you to the Gole di Pietra di Punta and the Torrente Frugno. Two dates in July round out your plans if you are interested in local festivals.
Rione Fossi and its historical traces
Rione Fossi is Accadia’s uninhabited medieval town centre. It was abandoned after the 1930 earthquake. Its features include cobbled streets, winding lanes and medieval dwellings, as well as the remains of churches and fortifications. There is also a mosaic of prehistoric caves and dwellings. Fossa dei Greci is the ancient name for the same place. This means its historical appeal ranges from prehistoric traces to the character of a medieval town centre.
Museum and monumental fountain
The Museo delle Origini (MOA) is located in Palazzo Di Stefano in Accadia and is designed as an archaeological and civic museum. The museum houses the sculpture Dea Madre, which has great symbolic significance for Accadia’s history and identity. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
The monumental fountain was built in 1836 under Ferdinand I of Bourbon. It commemorates the water brought in via the local aqueduct. Four tapering Doric columns support an entablature with triglyphs, topped by a pediment. The architecture can thus be read from the columns up to the articulated entablature and the pediment.
July dates for your travel plans
The Accadia Blues Festival takes place every year on the third weekend of July. The Feast of Madonna del Carmine is celebrated on 16 July. The dates follow different calendar markers: the festival is tied to a weekend, while the Feast of Madonna del Carmine falls on a specific day. If you include the feast in your plans, confirm the current programme locally.
Gole di Pietra di Punta and Torrente Frugno
The Gole di Pietra di Punta have small waterfalls and pools inhabited by amphibians and insects. In the warm season, wild orchids and forest lilies add splashes of colour to the vegetation. A path to the gorges starts at the Chiesetta di Santa Maria Maggiore and follows the bed of the Torrente Frugno. The excursion is not difficult; local conditions may vary. Check trail conditions before setting out.
The Cammino del torrente Frugno also offers a distinct nature experience: a gallery forest lines the route, consisting mainly of willows and poplars. The contrast is between the waterfalls, pools and seasonal blooms at the gorges and the gallery forest dominated by willows and poplars along the Cammino.
