San Donaci – Culture, Wine and History
Accommodation in San Donaci
San Donaci brings together sacred architectural heritage, festivals, wine traditions and a landscape where nature watching also plays a part. When looking for hotels in San Donaci, consider which of these themes you want to focus on during your stay: churches and local history, seasonal events, wine, or the surroundings of Li Paduli Nature Park.
Churches, History and Craftsmanship
The Chiesa Matrice di Santa Maria Assunta reflects a building history shaped by several styles. Its current appearance dates from 1899 and combines late Neoclassical elements with Apulian Baroque. An altar made of Lecce stone from an older church remains visible to visitors. You can reach the Chiesa Matrice on foot, by bicycle or by public transport; parking is available nearby.
The Chiesetta di Santa Maria delle Grazie serves a different purpose: today it is a cemetery chapel and preserves a 15th-century fresco of the Madonna and Child. The Tempietto di San Miserino stands in isolation among the vineyards of the San Donaci agricultural area. It can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car; parking is available nearby. Municipal access information for these two sites was updated on September 30, 2025. As access rules may change, check the conditions before visiting.
Earlier periods also form part of the area's history: the San Donaci area was inhabited by the Messapians. The remains of Roman country villas are believed to lie nearby. Nina Lolli, known in San Donaci as Mamma Nina, is another figure with a distinct local cultural connection. She devoted her life to helping others and exclusively to sacred embroidery. The Museo dedicato alla Serva di Dio Nina Lolli is a small museum dedicated to Mamma Nina and her embroidery.
Festivals and Culinary Traditions
The Fiera di San Vincenzo di Ferrer is an April event connected with local culture and traditions. Businesses present products, handmade goods and agricultural equipment. If you are planning your trip around a festival, check the dates for that year's event.
In August, celebrations are held in honor of the patron saint, Santa Maria delle Grazie. A procession carrying the statue winds through the streets of San Donaci. The secular program includes fireworks, concerts by the local band and market stalls; the specific program may vary from year to year. Separate from this is the Sagra degli antichi sapori, held every August and dedicated to the region's gastronomic and wine-making specialties. At the festival, visitors can sample pecura alla pignata, pezzetti te cavallu, carne rrustuta and gnemmarieddri, as well as traditional olive oil, wine and wood-fired bread. Traditional music groups provide music and dancing. Food, drinks and performing groups may vary from year to year.
Wine and Winery Insights
The history of Cantina San Donaci began in 1933, founded on the initiative of a group of twelve farmers. Cantine Paololeo's main winery is located in San Donaci, in the Parco del Negroamaro; the company was founded in 1989. These two company histories give the town's wine tradition different points of reference in time.
Two Wine Tour bookings also offer different focuses. Wine Tour 1 includes a guided tour of the winery's production areas and old cisterns, followed by a tasting of three wines paired with products from Salento cuisine. Wine Tour 2 adds a walk to discover native Salento grape varieties to the guided tour of the production areas and old cisterns. The difference, then, is in the focus: tasting and food on one tour, grape varieties and a walk on the other. Both bookings require confirmation from the winery.
Nature in the Surrounding Area
Li Paduli Nature Park lies near San Donaci. This oasis of biodiversity was created through the drainage of marshland. Depending on the season, geese, ducks and herons can be spotted among wetlands and dense reeds. Nature adds a seasonal dimension to the area's architecture and festival traditions: while its churches and historical sites tell stories of architecture and history, Li Paduli invites visitors to turn their attention to wetlands and birdwatching.
