Trani between culture and coastal landscapes
Accommodation in Trani
Discover Trani through a variety of interests: its architectural and museum history is represented by places such as the Castello Svevo, the Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino, and several museums. The landscape around Vasca Boccadoro offers a different perspective on the area. When planning your stay, consider which of these topics interest you most.
Architecture and religious heritage
The Castello Svevo in Trani was built in 1233 at the behest of Frederick II. Its outer ramparts were opened to the public in 2021. This date refers to when they opened at the time; if you would like to visit the ramparts, check the current visitor information in advance.
Construction of the Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino began in the late 11th century, and it is clad in locally sourced, slightly pink marble. It stands in an isolated position in a large square. The cathedral's construction period, materials, and freestanding location each provide a distinct architectural point of reference, none of which can be applied to the other buildings.
In the historic centre, the Scolanova Synagogue is an example of Apulian Romanesque architecture. It is considered the most significant testimony to Trani's old Jewish quarter. Tours must be booked in advance, at least 48 hours ahead. Tours are available in Italian, English, or French, and availability may vary by season.
Museums and their collections
Palazzo Beltrani opened to the public on 30 December 2009 and is a multifunctional museum. Its permanent exhibitions include an art gallery dedicated to the painter Ivo Scaringi (1937–1998). The Palazzo therefore brings together the history of the institution and a clearly defined focus within its collection.
The Polo Museale Diocesano occupies four levels in Piazza Duomo. The complex includes the Diocesan Museum, the Fondazione S.E.C.A. Typewriter Museum, and a cultural space. The Diocesan Museum opened in 1975 to house stone and sculptural objects from excavations and demolition work at Trani Cathedral and other churches in the city. Visitors interested in the origins of collection items will find a different perspective here than in the art gallery at Palazzo Beltrani.
Monastic history and archaeological remains
The Monastero di Colonna is a monumental complex dating to the early 12th century. Benedictines lived there initially; from 1427 to 1867, the monastery was occupied by Franciscans. This long succession makes its changing use a tangible part of its history.
The Santa Geffa Archaeological Park is three kilometres from Trani, near Via delle Tufare. It preserves the remains of the underground complex of S. Geffa. Its distance from the city and its proximity to Via delle Tufare make it easier to consider this archaeological site as a destination in its own right when planning, rather than treating it as one of the city's museums.
Landscape around Vasca Boccadoro
Vasca Boccadoro in the Boccadoro natural area is both a natural wetland and an architectural feature. It lies in a coastal landscape with some cultivated farmland. A narrow strip of beach extends from there to the west and east, adjoining the landscape. This place brings together natural surroundings, agricultural land, and a coastal feature. That distinguishes its landscape focus from the buildings and collections in the city.
