Monopoli combines beaches and a harbor with a historic center rich in cultural landmarks and churches, many of them close to one another. Maritime culture is also part of the town’s character: the fishing fleet’s arrival in the harbor is a visible expression of its vibrant connection to the sea.

Beaches and Historic Backdrop

Porta Vecchia is close to the historic center. Its crystal-clear water provides a backdrop to views of 16th-century walls, a tower, the artillery system and the cathedral’s bell tower. Here, the beach scenery meets distinctive historic buildings.

Porto Ghiacciolo lies at the foot of Abbazia Santo Stefano. The beach is broad and sandy, and its clear green water covers a sandy seabed. The two beach settings are therefore quite distinct: at Porta Vecchia, historic walls and the bell tower shape the view, while Porto Ghiacciolo is defined by its sandy beach, green water and position at the foot of the abbey. Seasonal services at Porto Ghiacciolo may change; if you are planning a visit, check what is available during your travel dates.

Churches, Architecture and History

Castello Carlo V was part of the coastal defense system commissioned by Charles V in Apulia. The castle is also a cultural center managed by the municipality and a venue for civil weddings. Abbazia Santo Stefano was founded in 1086 at the behest of Goffredo, Count of Conversano. In the 15th century, the Knights of Jerusalem settled there and transformed the abbey into a castle enclosed by walls and a moat.

Monopoli Cathedral houses the Byzantine icon of the Madonna della Madia. According to tradition, it arrived in Monopoli on a raft made of beams on the night of December 16, 1117. The Museo di Romualdo is located in underground rooms beneath the cathedral. Its exhibition route displays archaeological remains of the former Romanesque cathedral. The preserved evidence ranges from settlement traces dating to the Middle Bronze Age and ancient tombs to remains of the Romanesque crypt.

Palazzo Rendella also brings architecture together with a cultural purpose: the neoclassical building, with its large portico and loggias, houses the municipal library. Byzantine rock churches in karst depressions known as “lame” are carved into the rock and entirely decorated with frescoes. Together with the underground museum rooms and the churches in the historic center, these places reveal different aspects of the religious and architectural heritage.
