Lamie di Olimpia can be understood through Jazzile Square, rural architectural forms, and religious and festive traditions. The square is a concrete landmark for getting there and also the focal point of the townscape; stone houses, trulli, and lamie stand around it. The cultural picture also includes a war memorial, religious statues, and traditions with different focuses.

Getting There and Jazzile Square

To reach Le Lamie di Olimpe, follow state road SS 172 dei Trulli between Locorotondo and Fasano. About halfway along, turn onto provincial road SP 216 toward Cisternino. After about two kilometers on SP 216, you will reach the large Jazzile Square, which covers around 5,000 square meters. The directions can be divided into two steps: first, the approximate location of the turnoff between Locorotondo and Fasano; then, the remaining stretch along SP 216 to the square. This keeps the approximate location of the turnoff and the route to Jazzile clear as two separate waypoints.

Rural Architectural Forms

Stone houses, trulli, and lamie stand around Jazzile. Lamie, also known as casine, are summer residences surrounded by dry-stone walls and set amid nature. The terms differ in this respect: lamie and casine are alternative names, while trulli and stone houses are other architectural forms in the vicinity of the square. In the case of the lamie, their role as summer residences and their setting in nature are also part of their character, alongside their walled enclosures. The townscape is therefore defined not only by individual buildings but also by the rural setting formed by the lamie, dry-stone walls, and natural surroundings.

Remembrance and Religious Art

A war memorial erected in 1929 stands in the center of the square. Engraved on it are the names of soldiers who lived in the area at the time and died in the First World War. The year the memorial was erected and the remembrance it commemorates refer to different points in time: the memorial was built after the war, while its inscription honors the soldiers who fell during it. At the same time, the engraved names anchor this remembrance in the area where the soldiers lived.

The Holy Family is venerated in the church. It also houses statues of Saint Anthony of Padua, Our Lady of Sorrows, the Santi Medici, the Madonna del Pozzo, and the Immaculate Mary. While the war memorial commemorates those who fell, the church’s focus is on veneration and statues. Two distinct forms of cultural heritage thus stand side by side at the same destination: historical remembrance and religious art.

Festive Traditions and Dates

La Galvalcata is a historical reenactment of the tournament “du Jartidde” (Rooster). Since 1989, the Festa della Santa Famiglia has included a competition in which children, young people, and adults take part. The two traditions have different focuses: Galvalcata reenacts a named tournament, while the competition centers on participation by people of different age groups. If you want to plan your trip around the competition, check the specific date in advance.

The Festa Parrocchiale Lamie di Olimpia was scheduled for August 1 and 2, 2026, in C.da Lamie di Olimpia. These dates have already passed. If you are planning a trip around a festival or competition, check the latest event dates in advance.

Salumi and Tastings

Salumi D’Olimpia are produced and slowly cured. Visitors can sample Salumi di Olimpia in the producer’s tasting room; a note about reserving a table is also provided in connection with the tasting. The production method and the opportunity to sample the products are two distinct aspects of their culinary connection. If you are planning a tasting, also take note of the producer’s table-reservation information.
