Etroubles combines an alpine landscape with traces of local and regional history. At an altitude of 1,270 metres, the town is located in the alpine valley of the Great St Bernard and is surrounded by extensive forests and green pastures. This gives you two distinct areas to focus on when planning your trip: historical traces and paths through the landscape. You can decide which will shape your stay by taking a closer look at the specific sites and routes.

Culture and History

The Torre di Vachéry is a tower from the 12th century in the hamlet of Vachéry that is not open to visitors. The Latteria Turnaria, founded in 1853 as the region’s first turnaria dairy, now houses a museum about the production of Fontina, butter and Séras, featuring the original tools used at the time. Its focus on products and equipment complements the history of the tower with the story of local food production.

The Centrale Bertin has been redesigned as an ecomuseum and documents the transition of the rural communities of the Gran San Bernardo Valley to modernity. Unlike the Latteria, which focuses on specific foods and tools, this museum looks at how the communities in the valley have changed.

The Via delle Gallie and the Via Francigena are also connected chronologically: the ancient Via delle Gallie passed through Etroubles; the Via Francigena later developed along this route. This makes it possible to understand the history of the roads as a sequence of two distinct periods.

Hiking Trails and Their Differences

The summer hike from Etroubles to Bruson passes through meadows and a cool forest. Deer may be seen there in the early morning. If you are interested in the landscape and possible wildlife sightings, this trail offers a different focus from the historical sites. If you are planning to take it for the chance of spotting wildlife, the early morning is the relevant time.

The Etroubles–Saint-Oyen health trail runs for 2.1 km from Etroubles to Saint-Oyen and has an elevation gain of 79 m. The easy route is suitable for everyone and can also be used with a pushchair. It is recommended from May to October. The distance, elevation gain and accessibility provide practical guidance for planning this route.

The health trail runs from Etroubles to Saint-Oyen; the Nordic walking trail starts at the Etroubles sports area, passes through Saint-Oyen, among other places, and then returns to its starting point. The route is therefore a key difference when choosing between them: ending in Saint-Oyen or returning to Etroubles.

Getting There by Bus
