Pietracamela – Mountain Scenery and Historic Lanes
Accommodation in Pietracamela
When looking for a hotel in Pietracamela, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the historic center, mountain destinations, and the seasonal ski area in Prati di Tivo appeal to different interests. Pietracamela lies entirely within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park; the slopes around the town are steep and mostly covered with beech trees. The historic townscape and the mountainous surroundings thus offer two distinct sides to a trip.
Landscape and Townscape
The Corno Grande di Pietracamela Nature Reserve was established within the municipality in 1991. Together with the fact that the entire municipal area lies within the national park, it gives the town a tangible connection to nature. The steep, wooded slopes and the narrow lanes in the center tell different stories: outside the town, the terrain and beech forests shape the landscape, while in the old town, the winding lanes and stone buildings catch the eye.
The historic center is characterized by narrow lanes, buildings made of boulders and stones, and small balconies and terraces with viewpoints. Walking through the town, you can take in these features individually, rather than seeing Pietracamela only as a starting point for mountain activities. The town’s existence is documented from 1324, under the name “Petra.” The year 1432 is engraved above the portal of the Chiesa di San Giovanni; the number 1530 appears on the portal of the old church of San Rocco. These dates refer to different things: 1324 to the town’s historical name, and 1432 and 1530 to inscriptions on church portals. The Chiesa di San Giovanni also houses a permanent exhibition by Guido Montauti.
Mountaineering and Mountain Excursions
Mountaineering is also a prominent theme in Pietracamela. The CAI Abruzzo environmental education center CEA “Gli aquilotti” is located on the slopes of Corno Piccolo. The national park visitor center in Palazzo Dionisi houses a permanent exhibition on mountaineering, with photographic documentation of the activities of the Aquilotti del Gran Sasso, Italy’s first climbing club. The Museo dell’Alpinismo has also been set up in rooms provided by the national park at the visitor center.
A circular route to Pizzo Intermesoli, described as part of a CAI tour in September 2025, begins in the village at 1,005 m. It passes through the Rio Arno valley to Conca del Sambuco, continues to the northern summit at 2,483 m, and follows the ridge to the main summit of Pizzo Intermesoli at 2,635 m. Along the way, there are views of Val Maone and Corno Grande; on the return, the route goes through Val Maone back to Pietracamela. The tour is considered long and challenging and is suitable for experienced, well-trained hikers. This is important to bear in mind if you are considering making a mountain excursion the focus of your stay.
La Madonnina dell’Arapietra is an important starting point and connecting point for ascents of Corno Grande and Corno Piccolo. From Prati di Tivo, you can get there by cable car or via a hiking trail that runs alongside the lift; the walk takes about an hour. The cable car operates seasonally, so check current service before you travel. Corno Piccolo has numerous climbing routes on large limestone walls, with moderate to high difficulty grades. If you plan to climb there, check local route conditions.
Other Activities and Getting There
Prati di Tivo lies within the municipality of Pietracamela and is home to the ski area of the same name; its facilities operate seasonally. Mountain biking is also among the activities associated with Pietracamela. These options differ from the mountain excursions and climbing routes described above, so you can plan your stay around your own interests.
For the final road journey to Pietracamela and Prati di Tivo, follow the S.S. 80 from the direction of Montorio al Vomano as far as the Pietracamela–Prati di Tivo turnoff. If traveling by train on the Adriatic line from the north or south, your destination station is Teramo; from there, continue by TUA bus or by car. Check current bus services and road conditions before setting out to make sure your journey suits your planned stay.
