Bellante combines a medieval townscape with church art, archaeological remains and far-reaching views. If you are looking for a hotel in Bellante, this overview will help you get your bearings among the destination’s cultural and scenic attractions, from the fortified centre to the district of Ripattoni.

A medieval town centre with fortifications

Bellante was an old fief of the Acquaviva family. The historic centre preserves the layout of a medieval fortified settlement, known as incastellamento. Here, the term describes the traditional form of the fortified town centre. Surviving features include part of the ancient defensive walls, a square tower and a gateway. The gateway to the borgo was built in the 12th century, making it one of Bellante’s distinctive medieval structures.

The town’s layout also includes the characteristic “vie acquarie”: narrow lanes running between the houses that were once used to collect rainwater. This function shows how the lanes’ design was connected to everyday water supply. Together with the remains of the fortifications, these routes tell not only of defensive structures but also of how the historic town centre was organised.

Churches, art and symbols of the town

The parish church of Santa Maria in Bellante has a terracotta façade. Inside is an Epiphany painting by Nicola Monti, dated 1793 and attributed to the school of Paolo Veronese. Another architectural detail can be found at the church of Santa Croce, which has a Renaissance portal. Bellante’s traditional art and architecture thus range from medieval fortifications to a dated 18th-century painting.

The town hall tower also bears a striking detail: its weather vane displays the initials of the four cardinal directions, a cross and the municipal coat of arms; it also carries the inscription “Universitas Bellanti”. An older historical layer is represented by an oval funerary stele from the 6th century BC. It depicts a deceased person in stylised form and is one of Bellante’s archaeological remains. Those interested in local history will find a range of themes here: settlement patterns, religious art, civic symbols and early burial culture.

Ripattoni: castle remains and historic buildings

In the district of Ripattoni, remains of a 14th-century castle have survived, including a massive square-plan tower. At the foot of the castle tower stands Palazzo Saliceti, one of the historic buildings associated with the feudal landowning nobility. The church of Santa Maria del Erulis, also known as Santa Maria della Misericordia, tells a different architectural story. It has very ancient origins and combines classical elements with medieval walls.

These places offer different perspectives on Ripattoni: the castle remains point to medieval fortifications, Palazzo Saliceti to historic noble residences, and the church to the long development of religious architecture. So if you are choosing a destination based on cultural interests, Bellante cannot be reduced to a single building; the district of Ripattoni also contributes its own distinct traces of history.

Views and cultural programme

From the belvedere in Bellante, the view stretches from Montagna dei Fiori to the Adriatic. This panorama adds a scenic perspective to the historical attractions, with mountains and sea marking the two ends of the view. You can therefore appreciate Bellante both for its built heritage and for its vistas.
