Discover Archi: historic buildings and landscapes
Accommodation in Archi
Landscape and location
Archi sits on a rocky spur, overlooking both the Valle dell'Aventino and the Val di Sangro. From Archi, you can see the Sangro winding down to its mouth on the Adriatic, as well as the bay of the Gulf of Venere. The landscape stretches from the valleys to the river and the coast. This perspective offers a different way to appreciate the destination from its historic architecture.
Buildings in the historic centre
Castello di Archi is in the historic centre on Via Occidentale, in a commanding position above the settlement. It is a square fortified palace, originally a medieval castle, with corner towers and bastions. Through its location and architectural form, the Castello brings together two aspects of the townscape: its position in the historic centre and a history reaching back to the medieval castle.
The Church of Santa Maria dell'Olmo is in the upper part of the historic centre. Its late Baroque façade has a plastered surface, architectural detailing and decorative stone elements. Unlike the Castello, the church is notable not for fortifications but for the design of its façade. Admission is free; check the local service times before your visit.
The Torre dell'orologio is a bell tower adapted to house the municipal clock. This adaptation sets the tower apart from the palace and church, and points to a civic function. Archi also preserves features that reflect its distinctly medieval and historic character.
Earlier traces and other interests
At Fonte Tasca there is a settlement dating from the 11th to the 7th century BC, which falls within the Bronze Age. This archaeological site predates the medieval origins of the Castello by a considerable margin. Archi’s cultural history therefore brings together two distinct periods: the Bronze Age settlement and the town’s medieval character.
Sport fishing is available at Lake Oasi Vallescura, within the territory of Archi. If you plan to take part, check the local conditions in advance. Sport fishing offers a different focus from an interest in buildings and earlier settlement history, bringing a specific lakeside leisure activity to the fore. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether local history or fishing matters more to you.
Culinary highlights
Typical dishes from Archi include tagliatelle with mushrooms and truffle. Pizz e foje is a pizza made with cornmeal and vegetables. The two dishes have clearly different bases: pasta with mushrooms and truffle versus a cornmeal-and-vegetable preparation. If regional cuisine plays a role in choosing a destination, these dishes offer specific points of interest.
