Rátót lies on the western edge of Vas County, on the left bank of the Rába. Three features are particularly useful for getting your bearings: the locally protected Aradi Park, the memorial sites in the village, and the junction of Main Road 8 and the Szombathely–Szentgotthárd railway line. Together, they provide a concrete basis for deciding whether Rátót matches your travel interests.

Aradi Park: Nature and Remembrance

Aradi Park covers 5,657 m² and is a locally protected nature reserve. On a clearing by the Lahm Stream, 13 oak trees stand in memory of the martyrs of Arad. According to local tradition, Ferenc Deák planted the oaks; Deák often visited Rátót. The trees are arranged in a semicircle. In front of each oak stands an obelisk bearing the name, birth date, and year of death of one of the martyrs of Arad. In this way, the site combines a shared spatial arrangement with individual named memorials.

Other Memorial Sites in Rátót

A war memorial in front of the church in Rátót commemorates the innocent victims of the world wars. The municipality of Rátót erected a Trianon memorial in 2007 and a bust of Wass Albert in 2008. These memorial sites reflect different points of reference: the martyrs of Arad, the victims of the world wars, and Trianon and Wass Albert. The two memorials erected by the municipality can also be distinguished by their dates.

Transport and Finding Accommodation

Main Road 8 and the Szombathely–Szentgotthárd railway line intersect in Rátót. This results in heavy through traffic from the surrounding communities. The road, railway, and traffic from the surrounding area add another aspect to the character of the village, alongside the picture conveyed by the park and memorials.

Széll-Kálmán Castle in Rátót is currently operated as a castle hotel. As its operating status may change, check the latest information before your trip.

Vas County as a Wider Travel Region

Within the wider destination of Vas County, regional routes lead to other parts of the county. The Termál Kerékpáros Túraút leads to five thermal bath complexes and combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions as well as other thermal baths. The Vulkán Tour leads to Kis-Somlyó, Ság-hegy, and Belső-hegy. The routes therefore have clearly different themes: cycling and thermal bath visits on the one hand, and three named hills on the other.

The Vasi Skanzen is also part of the wider destination of Vas County. It presents the rural way of life and folk architecture of Vas County from the past two centuries. Since opening in 1973, it has rescued and rebuilt 43 buildings from 27 settlements. The broader regional picture thus includes not only routes and thermal baths, but also the history of rural architecture; Rátót itself is defined by Aradi Park and its various memorial sites.
