Rábapaty: Churches, Art and Local History
Accommodation in Rábapaty
Rábapaty can be understood in terms of cultural history through its churches, art and local heritage of monuments. If you are looking for a hotel, these specific topics can help inform your decision to visit the town. A separate look at the wider destination of Eisenburg reveals further landscape and cultural themes.
Churches, Art and Local History
Before 1754, Frkas Gábor had a chapel with a crypt built south of the Roman Catholic church in Rábapaty. The church was extended again in 1823. The addition of a chapel and an extension on the opposite side gave it a cruciform shape. The altarpiece “Szűz Mária születése” is by István Schaller. The architectural history and a specifically named painting thus offer two different points of reference for exploring the town.
The Lutheran church in Rábapaty is located at Kossuth L. u. 14. Public sculptures are also among the monuments listed in Rábapaty, adding another art form to its church buildings.
At the ninth Patyi Vesszős Festival, held in 2019, local craftspeople offered woven baskets at Liget tér. At the festival, the “Kőbe vésett barátság” stone was unveiled in Rábapaty. These two historical details link a craft offering and an unveiling to a specific festival occasion.
The Wider Destination of Eisenburg
The Írottkő Nature Park lies in the northwestern part of Vas County, within the wider destination of Eisenburg. The park encompasses the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. Őrség National Park was established on 1 March 2002 to preserve and present the natural, ethnographic and cultural-historical values of Őrség. Thus, alongside protected landscapes, their cultural values are also regional themes.
The routes also have different focuses. The Termál Kerékpáros Túraút (Thermal Cycling Route) leads to five spa complexes in Vas County and combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions, as well as other spas. The Vulkán Tour leads to Kis-Somlyó, Ság-hegy and Belső-hegy. By way of comparison, one route links cycling with spa visits, while the other leads to three named hills.
The dates associated with regional religious buildings are close together, but refer to different events: St. Michael’s Church in Csempeszkopács was built in the Romanesque style around 1250; the Romanesque church of Ják Abbey was consecrated in 1256. The Vasi Skanzen presents the rural way of life and folk architecture of Vas County from the past two centuries. Since opening in 1973, it has saved and rebuilt 43 buildings from 27 settlements.
