Simaság: Baroque Architecture, History and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Simaság
Historic buildings, an archaeological find nearby and the Akácos út cycling route offer concrete guidance when choosing a stay in Simaság. The local historic buildings and cycling route offer different points of interest; Eisenburg adds a broader regional destination to the local picture.
Church and Neoclassical Statue
The Mária-Magdolna Church in Simaság was first mentioned in 1338. It was formerly known as the Szent-Kereszt Church and was remodelled in 1800 in the Late Baroque style, based on plans by György Anreith. Opposite the church stands the Neoclassical statue of Nepomuk by Jahk. It dates from 1816 and bears a large crucifix.
The dates relate to different aspects: 1338 to the church’s first mention, 1800 to its remodelling, and 1816 to the statue. This makes it possible to distinguish the church’s recorded history from the dated work of art.
Cemetery Gate and Historical Traces
The gate structure and enclosing wall of the Temetőkapu cemetery gate were built around 1740 in the Baroque style. The wall contains a simple gravestone commemorating Pastor István Somogyi, who died in 1745. The cemetery gate thus brings together a Baroque structure and the memory of the late pastor.
Another historical trace lies near Simaság: a Roman cemetery dating from the 1st or 2nd century was discovered there in 1963. The find dates from long before the Baroque buildings; the cemetery is dated to between the 1st and 2nd centuries.
Cycling on the Akácos út
The 41-kilometre Akácos út cycling route is a circular route through Simaság, connecting, among other places, Bükfürdő, Iván and Lócs. The distance refers to the entire loop, not just the section in Simaság. Trekking, touring and road bikes are recommended for the Akácos út. As the route guide is older, check the current signage and surface conditions before setting off.
A Natura 2000 site borders Simaság. If you are planning a route, check the current boundary of the protected area.
Eisenburg as a Broader Regional Context
The Írottkő Nature Park lies in the northwestern part of Vas County, within the broader destination of Eisenburg. The nature park includes the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. Also within the broader destination of Eisenburg, the Termál Kerékpáros Túraút leads to five spa complexes in Vas County. The route combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions, as well as other spas.
Two internationally recognised thermal spas are located in Vas County, in Bük and Sárvár; they are 25 kilometres apart. Bükfürdő is two kilometres from the small town of Bük and is a separate medical and tourist centre, as well as one of Hungary’s spa resorts.
The Vasi Skanzen also offers a regional cultural connection. Since opening in 1973, it has rescued and rebuilt 43 buildings from 27 settlements. It presents the rural way of life and folk architecture of Vas County over the past two centuries.
