There are two distinct ways to discover Szálka: the artificial reservoir, with opportunities for fishing and hiking trails, and cultural sites in the town and its surroundings. The lake was created by damming a valley. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Szálka, you can first decide whether you want to spend most of your time by the lake and on the trails, or exploring exhibitions and local history.

Reservoir, Natural Beach and Hiking Trails

The Szálka Reservoir is an artificial body of water created by damming a valley. Fishing is possible at the lake, and you can also walk around Lake Szálka on hiking trails. The routes offer different points of reference: the hiking trail marked with a P runs along the northern side of the lake, following the main road between Mőcsény and Szálka. By contrast, a section of the Rockenbauer Pál South Transdanubian Blue Trail passes the southern part of the lake. These two details identify different points around the lake, while walking around it describes the general possibility of a hike along its perimeter. Markings and trail conditions may change; check the latest information before setting out.

The Szálka natural beach has been operating since 1999. Seasonal rules may change, so check the current visitor conditions before your visit.

Traditions, Churches and Local History

The German Nationality Room presents a traditional parlour and objects associated with the local culture, which has Serbian roots. The display thus brings together the room itself and objects from this cultural tradition. Visits are possible by prior arrangement; allow time to make an appointment and confirm the visiting arrangements in advance.

The Szálka Exhibition House focuses on old folk traditions and local natural assets. In contrast to the Nationality Room, its focus is on traditions and nature, while the traditional parlour and related objects take centre stage there.

The Roman Catholic church in Szálka was built in 1843; walls from an earlier medieval church were probably reused in its construction. St. Joseph’s Church is a listed monument. The Hirschbock statue also stands in the town centre. It commemorates a red deer stag shot in Szálka in 1891, whose 14.5-kilogram antlers held a world record for a long time.

The Mausz Chapel is located near Szálka, outside the town’s administrative boundary. Local farmers Michael and Anna Mayer commissioned it in 1891. On Easter Monday, local worshippers traditionally walk up to the chapel to commemorate the Emmaus meal. The link to this feast day provides a different focus from the churches and memorial sites in Szálka.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

When planning, you can take each set of conditions into account separately: trail markings and conditions may change for hikes, seasonal rules apply at the natural beach, and prior arrangements are needed for the Nationality Room. This helps you plan around the specific activities that matter to your stay.
