Discover Dombóvár: Culture, Nature and Thermal Baths
Accommodation in Dombóvár
When planning a trip to Dombóvár, you can tailor the balance of culture, nature and thermal experiences to your own interests. Specific destinations include the Kossuth Sculpture Group, several museums and historic buildings, trails in Szigeterdő and Konda Valley, and Gunarasfürdő. These different themes give your planning direction: museums and historic landmarks explore historical topics, trails and green spaces invite you to run and walk, and the spa offers wellness, thermal and medical services.
The Kossuth Sculpture Group and trails in Szigeterdő
The Kossuth Sculpture Group in Szigeterdő depicts the members of Hungary’s first responsible, independent government. The group originally stood in front of the Hungarian Parliament. This earlier location is a distinct part of its history and adds context to the political theme represented by the figures.
Szigeterdő also has a 600-metre synthetic running track and a 1.4-metre-wide paved path for runners and walkers. The stated measurements distinguish the two facilities: the track is described by its length, and the path by its width. Szigeterdő also includes a natural area under local nature protection. The area therefore brings together opportunities for exercise and protected nature.
Museums and historic buildings
The Dr. Sándor Szőke Local History Collection focuses on the cultural development of Dombóvár and its surroundings. It collects, studies, catalogues and exhibits material objects and other memorabilia. In addition to its growing collection, it presents interesting temporary exhibitions; the programme may change. If you would like to see a particular exhibition, check what is currently on offer before your visit.
The István Fekete Museum presents the life of the renowned 20th-century Hungarian writer István Fekete. Another historical destination is the Szigeterdő residential tower: the excavated and restored medieval tower houses a collection of stamped bricks as well as an industrial history exhibition. Visits are possible at any time by prior arrangement, so booking ahead is part of planning your visit.
On the outskirts of Dombóvár, the ruins of the medieval castle of the Dombai family can be seen beside Road 611; the site is now known as Gólyavár. Archaeological investigations suggest that its earliest building phase dates to the late 14th or early 15th century. This dating therefore remains an archaeological interpretation and applies to the earliest building phase, rather than to a precisely established year.
Green spaces and trails in Konda Valley
The Konda Valley Trail, which runs through Dombóvár, forms a green corridor with diverse plant and animal life. Konda Valley is Dombóvár’s largest protected natural area of local significance by area. The former Dombóvár industrial railway ran through the valley; a footpath follows the former narrow-gauge route along its railway embankment. This trail lets you experience the natural landscape and the railway’s former use together.
When comparing opportunities for exercise, the differences between Szigeterdő and Konda Valley are useful to keep in mind: Szigeterdő has a running track with a specified length and a paved path with a specified width. In Konda Valley, a footpath follows the embankment of a former narrow-gauge railway through an ecologically diverse corridor. These descriptions offer different points of reference for planning your visit, as they refer to different types of routes.
Thermal experiences at Gunarasfürdő
Gunarasfürdő welcomes visitors year-round with wellness, thermal and medical services. In summer, the outdoor swimming pool has seven pools and a water slide park. These facilities are specifically associated with summer, so check which seasonal facilities and services are available before travelling. Gunarasfürdő is a spa town, located about three kilometres from the administrative boundary of Dombóvár. This distance refers to the administrative boundary, not the city centre.
The thermal water also has its own history: this fluorine-rich alkaline hydrogen carbonate medicinal water was discovered in 1973. The history and the services described give Gunarasfürdő a different focus from Dombóvár’s museums, buildings and trails. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether you would prefer to focus on cultural history, exercise in nature or a visit to the thermal baths.
