The churches of Kálmánháza offer several perspectives on the town’s religious heritage. Construction dates, a consecration, and the veneration of a relic each provide a specific historical or religious context.

Churches and Religious Heritage in Kálmánháza

The new Greek Catholic church in Kálmánháza was consecrated on October 12, 1986, by Bishop Dr. Keresztes Szilárd in honor of “Istenszülő oltalma” (Protection of the Mother of God). A relic of Saint Nicholas is also venerated in the town’s Greek Catholic church. A dated consecration and the veneration of a relic thus stand alongside one another as distinct aspects of Greek Catholic heritage.

The Evangelical church in Kálmánháza was built in 1943. The Fatimai Szűz-templom was built in 1986 in a modern style and is dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima. The local church history therefore brings together different construction periods and religious dedications.

Their cultural focuses differ: in Vaja, the collection is housed in a Renaissance castle; in Nyírbátor, the panopticon depicts members of the Báthori family.

Andrássy Castle in Tiszadob was built between 1880 and 1885 in the French Gothic style by former Prime Minister Andrássy Gyula, based on plans by Alpár Ignác. Another point of reference in time is the region’s medieval church landscape: the Hungarian northern section of the Route of Medieval Churches connects 37 churches there.

Marshes and Protected Nature

The Bátorliget Primeval Swamp covers approximately 53 hectares, is strictly protected, and preserves the various stages in the vegetation and landscape history of the Alföld plain particularly completely. The Cégénydányád Park Nature Reserve currently covers 14.28 hectares. Nyíres-tó and Báb tava near Csaroda are distinctive peat bogs; their history dates back to the Ice Age. Different aspects are central to these natural sites: the preserved stages of development at the Bátorliget Primeval Swamp, and the peat bog character and Ice Age origins of Nyíres-tó and Báb tava.

Near Tiszadob, a 1,000-hectare nature reserve includes oxbow lakes, riparian forests, and grassland. A large heron colony is found in Tölgyes Forest, where 80 to 90 pairs nest. The 77-hectare Vajai reservoir near Vaja is fed by the Vajai main ditch and is suitable for fishing and irrigation. The wider destination thus offers both protected habitats and a body of water with specified uses.
