Discover Nyírbátor: Churches, Báthori Heritage and Culture
Accommodation in Nyírbátor
Nyírbátor offers a range of cultural attractions for visitors, including churches and historic buildings, the history of the Báthori family, exhibitions and a thermal bath. The Várostörténeti Sétány also connects city paths with engaging accounts of local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Nyírbátor, you can first consider which of these themes you would like to focus on during your stay.
City history along the Várostörténeti Sétány
The 450-metre-long Várostörténeti Sétány runs between the Minorite Church and the Reformed Church. This pedestrian route connects the two churches for locals and tourists. Life-size sculptures along the way illustrate the roots of Nyírbátor’s dragon culture, the legend of Szentvér utca and the history of the Báthori family. On a short walk, you can encounter both local traditions and the family’s historical significance.
The statue of Voivode István Báthori stands between the Reformed Church and Báthori Castle. It adds a specific monument to the cityscape’s historical character. The Sétány and the statue present different aspects of the city’s history: here, stories and their visual representation; there, the memory of a significant historical figure.
Churches and architectural history
The Reformed Church was commissioned by István Báthori, Voivode of Transylvania. Construction probably began in 1484 and was completed in 1511. Beside the church stands a wooden bell tower dating from 1640, built from oak beams in the Transylvanian style and almost 30 metres high. It is considered Hungary’s oldest and largest wooden bell tower. Inside the tower, a renovated staircase and a lift lead to the restored roof structure, which is open to visitors and considered unique in Europe.
The Minorite Church also has architectural details to discover, including richly decorated altars and a pulpit. The Greek Catholic Church offers a different impression. It is Baroque, was built in 1932 and renovated in 2013. The different construction periods and styles make church architecture a subject in its own right during your trip, alongside Báthori sites and the city stories told along the Sétány.
Báthori history and collections
Rebuilt in 2006, Báthori Castle preserves the only surviving part of the former castle, whose standing walls contain medieval remains. A permanent exhibition explores the era of the Báthori family and the legends associated with it. The site’s history is presented not only through the walls, but also through the exhibition’s themes.
The Báthori István Museum holds archaeological, historical, ethnographic, military history, fine art and applied art collections. Its permanent exhibitions include “Nyírbátor város évszázadai” and a display commemorating the 70-year history of the border guard. The Városi Galéria also has a puppet exhibition featuring pieces from the collection of Kissné Szalontai Judit. Together, these places offer different ways to explore the area, from city and family history to archaeological and art collections, as well as a distinctive puppet collection.
Thermal bath, fishing and horse riding
The pools at Sárkány Wellness és Gyógyfürdő are supplied with water drawn in Nyírbátor and known as Báthory medicinal water. It is calcium-magnesium-hydrogen carbonate medicinal water with a dissolved salt content of 1,526 mg/l. The bath adds a different kind of travel experience to the historical attractions: a visit to a bathing facility whose water is characterised by its composition and local origin.
Fishing is currently possible at Szénaréti-tó. Day permits are available on site, at the Csali fishing shop at the beginning of Fáy út and at Sorompó presszó on Gyulaji út. As permit details may change, check them before fishing. Horse riding is available at Fedeles Lovarda, which opened in autumn 2014. Alongside churches, exhibitions and the thermal bath, fishing and horse riding are additional activities to choose from.
Choose the cultural focus or activity you would like to shape your trip, then use the hotel search to find accommodation in Nyírbátor.
