Horse-riding activities, open days and pilgrimage

Főnix Park, on the border between Mátészalka and Nyírcsaholy, regularly holds open days featuring animal petting, insights into farm life, fruit processing, horse riding and other activities. It offers riding lessons for beginners and advanced riders. For its autumn rides, the park recommends participants have confident riding skills; the required ability is agreed in advance. These activities vary depending on the programme and experience level.

The pilgrimage for the Feast of the Assumption is a tradition that has been observed for many decades. Traditionally, almost one hundred people set out from Nyírcsaholy on Saturday morning and make the 36-kilometre pilgrimage to Máriapócs, regardless of their denomination. If you plan to include this pilgrimage in your trip, check the date in advance.

The three events differ in their timing: open days are held regularly, autumn rides take place in autumn, and the pilgrimage traditionally begins on a Saturday morning. Check the current dates for open days and the pilgrimage, as well as arrangements for riding activities, in advance.

Bátorligeti Ancient Moor covers about 53 hectares and is strictly protected; it particularly fully preserves the various stages in the vegetation and landscape history of the Alföld plain. Cégénydányád Park Nature Reserve currently covers 14.28 hectares, making it smaller in area. Near Csaroda, Nyíres-tó and Báb tava are distinctive peat bogs whose formation dates back to the Ice Age. The nature reserve near Tiszadob covers 1,000 hectares of oxbow lakes, riparian forests and grassland. In Tölgyes Forest, 80 to 90 pairs of herons nest in a large heron colony. The protected areas have different features: vegetation and landscape history define Bátorligeti Ancient Moor, while the area near Tiszadob encompasses oxbow lakes, riparian forests and grassland. The peat bogs Nyíres-tó and Báb tava near Csaroda add another point of comparison, with their origins dating back to the Ice Age.

Near Vaja is a 77-hectare water reservoir fed by the Vajai Main Canal and suitable for fishing and irrigation.
