Somogyacsa brings together religious and archaeological heritage with landscapes that provide habitats for fish and birds. Local points of interest include Kálváriadomb at the entrance to the village, two medieval earthworks and Gerézdpuszta, which belongs to the municipality. This makes it possible to shape a stay around different interests: local history, nature or routes in the surrounding area.

Religious and Medieval Heritage

Kálváriadomb is located on Somogyacsa’s main street, at the entrance to the village. A triple cross stands on the hill, with Stations of the Cross on either side; behind them is a row of chestnut trees. The cross, Stations and trees bring religious tradition and landscape together in this place. The hill is therefore a tangible point of reference for the religious and landscape history of Somogyacsa.

Kócos-hegy and Pogány-domb are also part of the village’s historical picture. Both are medieval earthen forts, or earthworks, in Somogyacsa. The names refer to two distinct archaeological sites from the same era, so they should not be understood as a single location. Those interested in medieval history can consider them as separate local points of interest, while Kálváriadomb offers a different, religiously themed focus.

Gerézdpuszta: Waters, Chapel and Wildlife

The Gerézdi Lakes are located in Gerézdpuszta, which belongs to Somogyacsa. Their surroundings are peaceful and scenic, and the waters provide a habitat for numerous fish and bird species. This makes the ponds a nature destination with a specific ecological dimension: their character is defined not only by the scenery but also by the habitat they provide for the animals found there.

Also in Gerézdpuszta is the Chapel of Saint Martin, dedicated to Saint Martin. It was built in 1892 in a classicising style. Its dedication, construction date and architecture give the surroundings a historical and religious dimension alongside their natural appeal. Different points of interest thus sit side by side in Gerézdpuszta, without the chapel or the ponds replacing the overall character of Somogyacsa.

A buffalo reserve is located at the end of Táncsics utca in Somogyacsa. A grazing herd can occasionally be seen there. A sighting should not be expected regularly; the possibility of an occasional observation adds an animal that is quite different from the fish and bird species at the Gerézdi Lakes to the municipality’s nature attractions.

Routes in the Surrounding Area

The signposted Koppányvölgyi touring route network is located near Somogyacsa. It is nearly 100 kilometres long, has rest areas and lookout points, and can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The network connects sights in the wider area around Somogyacsa. Its significance therefore lies not in just one activity: the different ways of getting around and the links to other sights offer a variety of ways to explore the region. The rest areas and lookout points are also features of this route network.

Regional Context: South Balaton

In the broader South Balaton destination, the Zselici Landscape Protection Area offers another connection with nature. In 2009, it received the title of International Dark Sky Park because of its low levels of light pollution; the Zselici Csillagpark was built in the heart of the protected area. This information places a special regional nature and night-sky attraction in context. It complements Somogyacsa’s local points of interest, such as the Gerézdi Lakes and the two medieval earthworks, with an explicitly broader perspective.

This distinction can help you choose how to experience Somogyacsa based on your interests and define the kind of stay you are looking for.
