Balatonendréd: Bobbin lace, churches and nature
Accommodation in Balatonendréd
Balatonendréd brings together church architecture, bobbin lace and works of art with the Csipkebokor Nature Trail. These offer different focal points to consider when planning your trip: the churches and craft tradition lead into the town’s history, while the eight-kilometre trail is connected with nature. So if you are looking for a hotel for Balatonendréd, you can first decide whether architectural and craft history or the trail’s connection with nature is the deciding factor in your travel plans.
Churches and local history
The Roman Catholic church in Balatonendréd was built in 1744; a wall from the Turkish fortress was used for its west wall. The year and the reused masonry shape its architectural history. The Reformed church was built around 1790 on the hillside behind the Reformed parsonage. By comparison, they offer different temporal and spatial reference points: the Catholic church is distinguished by its exact construction date and the wall, while the Reformed church is characterised by its approximate date and location on the hillside behind the parsonage.
A statue of the Virgin Mary also has a local history with two stages: it was erected in the town centre in 1897 and later moved to the garden of the Catholic church. There is also a cross and double-cross artwork on the northern edge of the town. The statue’s relocation is part of its history, while the artwork’s location on the northern edge of the town connects it to the settlement’s layout.
Bobbin lace and exhibition
The town’s first bobbin-lace course began in Balatonendréd in 1908. It was organised by the Reformed pastor at the time, Kájel Endre. Since then, the town’s name has been associated with bobbin lace; Endrédi vert csipke has been made in Balatonendréd since 1908. The start of the course and the production of the lace emphasise different aspects: the first course marks the beginning of organised instruction, while the named lace reflects the local connection to its production.
At its opening in spring 2022, the exhibition brought together the history of Endrédi bobbin lace, works by folk woodcarver Huszár László, and the coin collection of Sipos János. The three themes range from local craft traditions to woodcarving and numismatics. In this exhibition context, bobbin lace is presented alongside other artistic and collection-related themes.
Csipkebokor Nature Trail and nature
The Csipkebokor Nature Trail is eight kilometres long, starts on the edge of Balatonendréd and leads through the surrounding natural landscape. Alongside architectural and craft history, it offers a route with a defined length and a connection to nature. If you plan to walk the trail, check its current condition before setting out. The route has a different focus from the town’s history and can play a distinct role in your travel plans.
Lake Balaton - South as a regional setting
The broader destination of Lake Balaton - South adds a regional nature and landscape perspective: in 2009, the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet was awarded International Dark Sky Park status because of its low light pollution. The Zselici Csillagpark was established in the heart of the protected area. This regional perspective opens up a different topic from Balatonendréd’s architectural and craft history. When planning your trip, you can distinguish whether local cultural history or the wider setting of the Lake Balaton - South destination is your main interest.
