Somogyvár brings together nature and culture for trip planning. Somogyvári Kupavár Hill Nature Reserve is a unique nature reserve of national importance, covering 29.89 hectares. Its natural and scenic features include the panorama from Kupavár Hill, the Szentesica Spring and the Koppány Memorial. A reconstructed model of the abbey is also on display in the entrance area of Széchenyi Castle. Somogyvár thus offers a range of themes to consider when choosing your stay.

Panorama from Kupavár Hill

From Kupavár Hill, the panorama extends towards Lake Balaton and north and west across Nagyberek. At the southeastern edge of Kupavár Hill stands a partially wooden-built lookout tower, from which you can enjoy the view. The directions and the tower offer different reference points for a stay focused on the landscape. As the condition of the lookout tower may change, check before your visit.

Szentesica Spring and the Koppány Memorial

The clear-water Szentesica Spring lies at the western foot of Kupavár Hill and is also called Szent-István Spring. This is another name for the same spring and may help with finding your way. The Koppány Memorial stands beside the spring within the protected area. It is about a ten-minute walk from Vár Hill. This time estimate gives a rough indication of the length of the walk.

Hiking trail and excursion in Brézai Forest

A green-marked hiking trail crosses the eastern side of the protected area. At the time of writing, it was not yet shown on the North Somogy hiking map. Since trail markings may change, check the latest map and the markings on site before setting out.

Excursionists will find a parking area, a shelter and a fire pit in Brézai Forest. These facilities shape the practical character of the excursion destination; the lookout tower, by contrast, is all about the panorama. As the availability of facilities may change, check their condition before your visit.

The approximate walking time from Vár Hill to the Koppány Memorial can help with planning your schedule. For the green-marked hiking trail, its location on the eastern side of the protected area and the map status provide orientation. The two notes therefore serve different planning purposes: timing a walk and finding your way using the map and trail markings.

The abbey model at Széchenyi Castle

A reconstructed model of the abbey is on display in the entrance area of Széchenyi Castle. Unlike the natural attractions around Kupavár Hill, the focus here is a specific model inside the castle. If the model is one of your reasons for visiting, check the castle’s visiting arrangements in advance.

Regional nature context

In the broader Lake Balaton – South destination, the Zselic Landscape Protection Area received the International Dark Sky Park title in 2009 because of its low light pollution. The Zselic Star Park was established in the heart of this protected area. This regional nature context complements Somogyvár’s landscape and viewpoint themes without replacing its local features.
