Felsőmocsolád: Ancient Linden, Churches and Nature
Accommodation in Felsőmocsolád
Felsőmocsolád combines a long local history with distinctive buildings and natural features. The Ancient Linden, two churches with different building histories, and the Pokol torka forest gorge give the village its varied character. When choosing a destination, you can therefore take in both cultural history and landscape.
Local History and Buildings
Felsőmocsolád was first mentioned in a charter in 1229 under the name Muchula. The settlement dates back to the Árpád era and was already established before the Mongol invasion. These early historical references reach far back before the construction dates recorded for the churches and the castle.
The Munkás Szent József Church in Felsőmocsolád was converted from a castle built in 1790; its tower was added in 1955. The Kacskovics–Bánó Castle includes a manor house commissioned by Derenkai Erőss József in 1790. The Reformed Church is classified as late Baroque and was enlarged in 1821. Its building history thus includes a conversion, later additions and an enlargement.
The Ancient Linden and Its History
The Ancient Linden is about 400 years old; this age should be understood as an estimate passed down over time. In 2012, the Ancient Linden of Felsőmocsolád won the “Tree of the Year” competition with 11,158 votes, taking first place. The estimated age and the competition result tell different parts of its story: one describes the tree’s long history, while the other records a specific achievement in a historical competition.
It is no more than a ten-minute walk from the castle to the Ancient Linden. The approximate walking time may vary depending on path conditions.
Forest, Gorge and Water
A 29.52-hectare portion of the “Mocsoládi-erdő” Natura 2000 site lies within the municipality. According to the 2021 management plan, this area accounts for 1.14 percent of the site’s total area and 1.79 percent of the municipal area. The two percentages therefore refer to different areas of reference.
Pokol torka is a distinctive natural formation in the forest: a deep loess gorge with a small stream. Today, a spring flows gently in its crevice. The combination of gorge, stream and spring makes the site’s natural features clear without confusing them with one another. Another spring with abundant water, Malom-árok, flows toward Felsőmocsolád. The National Blue Trail also passes through Felsőmocsolád.
Exhibition Space and Getting Around
The village centre has an exhibition space that is open year-round and features an interactive escape-room game. Before visiting, it is advisable to check the current booking and opening arrangements. The renovated exhibition building is easily accessible to wheelchair users and visitors with strollers; check the current visitor arrangements before setting out.
In the village centre, a 100 m² promenade offers cyclists a place to rest. On the old Route 67, tourists travelling to the region from Lake Balaton and Kaposvár can take a break when conditions permit. These details provide two specific reference points for getting around the village and travelling in the region.
