Szenna: Szennai Open-Air Museum, Reformed Church and Circular Route
Accommodation in Szenna
The Szennai Open-Air Museum at 2 Rákóczi Street gives Szenna a clear cultural and historical focus: the ethnographic open-air museum presents Somogy’s traditional village architecture and way of life. Alongside it, the Szennai Heritage Nature Trail and the four-kilometre Szennai Circular Walk offer two routes that explore nature and architecture around the village. This gives you a choice between a focus on the museum and a route connecting several named points; each perspective draws attention to a different side of Szenna.
A closer look at the Reformed Church
The open-air museum is home to the Reformed Church, built in 1785. Its painted coffered ceiling is decorated with a colourful floral pattern; the front of the men’s pew features a distinctive mermaid motif. The year of construction, floral ceiling and figurative pew motif offer different points of interest: the date places the building in time, while the decorations draw the eye to its design. This makes the museum’s broader theme of village architecture tangible in a single building. Before your visit, it is a good idea to check the museum’s current operating information.
Two routes, different highlights
The Szennai Heritage Nature Trail focuses on the natural beauty, wildlife and architectural sights around Szenna. Its subject matter brings together the area’s natural and built heritage, while the open-air museum focuses on Somogy’s traditional village architecture and way of life. Check local conditions before setting out for a walk.
The Szennai Circular Walk is a 4-kilometre loop. Its route includes the nature trail, the open-air museum, Lázi Hill and a thatched mud house. Different features are relevant when choosing between the routes: the nature trail focuses on nature, wildlife and architecture, while the Circular Walk has a stated length and several named stops. This lets you weigh up a route with described themes against a circular route with a specific distance and stops.
Bus connections to the open-air museum
Several bus stops are located 80 metres from the main entrance to the Szennai Open-Air Museum. Buses run from there to Kaposvár and back. If you plan to use this connection, check routes and timetables before travelling, as they may change.
Nature highlights in the wider Balaton - South destination
The wider Balaton - South destination offers further nature and landscape highlights. In 2009, the Zselic Landscape Protection Area was named an International Dark Sky Park because of its low light pollution; the Zselic Starry Sky Park was established in the heart of the protected area. Baláta lies between Kaszó and Szenta and is considered one of Somogy’s most valued natural treasures. Somogy County also includes, among other places, Kis-Balaton, the Zselic Landscape Protection Area, Barcs Juniper Woodland and Babócsa Basakert. These regional connections complement Szenna’s local cultural and walking themes with a protected area, a star park and other natural attractions.
