Nagykáta: Architectural History, Remembrance and Cultural Events
Accommodation in Nagykáta
Nagykáta can be explored through its architectural history, places of remembrance and recurring annual cultural events. Nearby, to the east of the town, lies Egreskáta, a landscape along the Hajta stream. The town’s history and its wetlands offer different points of interest; planning a trip also involves different considerations of timing: for events, the date matters, while conditions in the wetlands change with the seasons.
Architectural and Local History
The Szent György Church in Nagykáta was built in the 16th century and rebuilt around 1745. Its history therefore includes an early construction and a much later rebuilding phase. The Keglevich Chapel in Nagykáta was built in the 18th century. In terms of chronology, the church’s 16th-century origins and its rebuilding around 1745 stand alongside one another, while the chapel dates from the 18th century. This provides a way to place different periods of local architectural history in context.
Keglevich Castle is associated with a specific date in the history of 1849: Görgei’s headquarters were located there on April 4. Kossuth visited the wounded from the Battle of Tápióbicske at the castle; the battle was fought partly within the town limits. Today, the castle houses the mayor’s office. The site thus brings together a historical event and a present-day municipal function. The remembrance of 1849 is also part of the official town day, which falls on the same calendar date.
Remembrance and Cultural Events
April 4 is Nagykáta’s official town day. At the annual commemorative ceremony, Hungarian and foreign military reenactment groups remember the 1849 engagement after a tribute to the fallen and a wreath-laying on the banks of the Tápió, at the former battlefield. The ceremony links the anniversary with an annual tradition of remembrance. Individual program details may vary. If you plan your trip around the ceremony, check the details for the relevant year.
The international Kátai Tánctalálkozó takes place every year in Nagykáta and has a tradition spanning several decades. Also held in Nagykáta each September is TápióFeszt, a festival celebrating traditions through gastronomy and culture. The events offer different cultural highlights: the Tánctalálkozó focuses on its international character and long tradition, while TápióFeszt centers on gastronomy and culture. If you plan your trip around an event, check its date; for TápióFeszt in particular, check the schedule for the current edition.
Egreskáta and the Surrounding Landscape
Egreskáta lies east of Nagykáta along the Hajta stream. The landscape covers 350 hectares and includes reed marshes surrounded by saline and sandy grasslands, as well as salt lakes. Between the wetlands is also a remnant of a steppe oak forest covering a few hectares. The bodies of water include Bata-tó, Monori-tó and Sós-tavak. Egreskáta therefore offers a different focus from Nagykáta’s architectural and urban history: here, the highlights are wetlands, grasslands, lakes and the remnant of the forest. Conditions in the wetlands vary with the seasons; take this into account when planning your trip.
