Kistarcsa: Culture, Tradition and Sport
Accommodation in Kistarcsa
Kistarcsa brings together religious history and local memorial sites with Slovak cultural traditions, folklore, sport and hiking trails in the surrounding countryside. When choosing a hotel, these interests may play a part: a trip focused on memorial sites differs in theme from a stay geared more towards recurring events or physical activity.
Cultural History and Memorial Sites
The Rózsafüzér Királynője Church in Kistarcsa was consecrated in 1883 in honour of the Queen of the Holy Rosary. Another connection to cultural history is the Slovak Ethnographic Collection, which was handed over to the people of Kistarcsa on 20 May 2008. A clearly named church dedication and an ethnographic collection thus stand side by side as distinct aspects of the local heritage.
Local cultural heritage also includes the 1956 monument and the memorial wall in October 23 Square, as well as a remnant of the wall of the former internment camp. A statue of Saint Imre, created by sculptor Ferenc Sidló in 1938, stands on Thököly Street. While the church’s dedication shapes its historical significance, the statue can be attributed to a specific artist and year of creation.
Slovak Traditions and Events
The week-long Őszi Kulturális Hét (Autumn Cultural Week) includes the Görhönyfesztivál. Since Kistarcsa became a town in 2005, an anniversary event has been held regularly in connection with the cultural week organised by the KIKE association (Kistarcsai Kulturális Egyesület); the Görhönyfesztivál is also part of this cultural week.
Two folklore gatherings follow their own annual rhythm: the nationwide Slovak gathering Tulipán and the Pántlika minority folklore gathering alternate. Kistarcsa’s traditional Slovak costume can be seen especially at events celebrating the preservation of traditions. Alongside named gatherings, costumes and the preservation of traditions are also among the cultural features that distinguish Kistarcsa.
Guided tours in Slovak and Hungarian are available at Szlovák Ház in Kistarcsa by prior arrangement. Arrange your tour before your visit if it is important to your travel plans. These tours are organised differently from the regularly described events and the alternating annual folklore gatherings.
Sport, Hiking Trails and Festival History
Kistarcsa regularly hosts swimming, cycling, triathlon, judo and football competitions and tournaments. Each discipline offers a different sporting focus. In addition, popular hiking trails run through the surrounding countryside of Kistarcsa. Competitions and tournaments on the one hand, and trails through the countryside on the other, offer different ways to include physical activity in your travel plans.
The Kistarcsai Kakasfőző Fesztivál is also part of the town’s event history: it was first held in 2012 and, in the following years, ranked among Kistarcsa’s most popular events alongside the Böllerwettbewerb. This timeline adds a specific perspective on the festival’s history to the recurring event schedules described above.
