Romhány: Routes, Baroque Bridge and Rákóczi Memorial
Accommodation in Romhány
For travel planning, Romhány brings together several clearly distinct themes: a section of the Országos Kéktúra, the Rákóczi educational trail, a Baroque bridge and memorial sites commemorating the Battle of Romhány. Also nearby are the Lókos Valley, the Cserhát mountain ranges and a Turkish hazel associated with a traditional story. Which of these themes you choose to focus on can help structure your hotel selection and the timing of your stay.
Landscape and routes
Romhány lies in the Lókos Valley and is surrounded by the Cserhát mountain ranges. Section 18 of the Országos Kéktúra passes through Romhány between Nógrád and Becske. If you include this section in your trip, check the latest route information for navigation.
The Rákóczi educational trail has seven stops and is about 11 km long. In addition to Romhány, it also runs through the areas of the municipalities of Kétbodony and Szátok. The two routes can be distinguished by their different details: for the Országos Kéktúra, the section and the connection between Nógrád and Becske are specified; for the Rákóczi educational trail, the number of stops and approximate length are highlighted.
The landscape also has a planning designation: Romhány is intersected by zones of the national ecological network for core areas, ecological corridors and buffer areas. The settlement is also intersected by a zone that must be given particular consideration from the perspective of landscape protection. These designations add the perspectives of ecology and landscape protection to the view of the valley and mountains. Consult current planning maps for precise boundaries.
Stone bridge and Baroque details
The three-arched stone bridge in Romhány was built in the 18th century in the Baroque style and crosses an old channel of the Lókos stream. The number of arches describes its construction, the Baroque style its period of design, and the old stream channel the bridge’s local setting. A Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on the southern parapet, set on a tall stone pedestal decorated with a capital.
Rákóczi memorial and Turkish hazel
In the memorial park on the outskirts of Romhány, on the left-hand side of the road to Szátok, stands an eight-metre-high monument to the Battle of Romhány, erected in 1932. A turul crowns the obelisk; relief portraits of Francis II Rákóczi and Kuruc commander-in-chief Sándor Károlyi appear on its sides. A memorial plaque commemorates 93 Swedish, Polish and French soldiers who fell in battle. The reference to the battle concerns 22 January 1710, while 1932 is the year the monument was erected.
According to the municipal handbook, the Turkish hazel (Corylus colurna) in Romhány is about 20 metres tall; its crown is about 25 metres across and its trunk circumference is 250 centimetres. The tree’s size may change over time. According to written accounts, a former soldier visited Francis II Rákóczi during his exile in Rodostó. The prince gave him a Turkish hazel sapling to plant in Romhány in memory of the battle. The story thus presents a traditional connection between the tree and the battle.
