Szanda: Palóc traditions and a hike to the castle ruins
Accommodation in Szanda
Szanda can be explored through two distinct travel interests: Palóc traditions and a hike to the castle ruins. Several cultural points of interest are located in Szandaváralja, including the Tájház and Máriácska Káponkája; the described tour to Vár-hegy also starts there. When choosing a hotel, it may be helpful to first decide whether culture or hiking will be the main focus of your stay.
Palóc tradition and local culture
The Palóc community around Szanda has passed down fruit growing and fruit processing from mother to daughter for centuries. One specific example is the GEOfood-labelled preserves from Szandaváralja: Viktorné Benedek Boglárka makes them from fruit grown in the local orchards. The preparation draws on knowledge she learned from her parents. Tradition and preserves thus represent two sides of the same subject: processing passed down through generations and its specific local expression.
The Tájház in Szandaváralja features a community-created exhibition that preserves local values. It can be visited free of charge; for practical planning, it is advisable to check current visiting arrangements in advance. Máriácska Káponkája has stood for more than 100 years on Rákóczi út, in the part of Szandaváralja known as Kacsapart. Together, the exhibition and the Káponkája offer different cultural points of connection: a community initiative and a local structure that has stood for a long time.
Hike to the castle ruins and Mária Spring
For the hike to the castle, drivers can leave their vehicle at the bus turnaround on the edge of Szandaváralja and follow the Kék Túra from there. The blue-marked Kék Túra leads to the foot of Vár-hegy; there, the also blue-marked L trail branches off and leads to the castle ruins. When navigating, look out for the change in trail name at the junction, as both sections are marked in blue. Check the current route and conditions before setting off.
With the support of the municipality, seating, steps and wooden railings have been installed at Mária Spring. The spring, which had been at risk of drying up, was cleaned; today, its water flows from a small pipe. Check the current conditions around the spring when visiting.
Culture in the wider destination of Neuburg
In the wider destination of Neuburg, Hollókő is another point of interest for Palóc culture. The old village is a Palóc settlement in Nógrád County in northern Hungary and a consciously preserved, living example of rural life before the 20th-century agricultural revolution. The Madách Imre Memorial House in Csesztve and the Mikszáth Kálmán Memorial Museum in Horpács offer other cultural highlights: the permanent exhibition at the Madách House covers the history of the Madách family, with a focus on „Az ember tragédiája“. The Mikszáth Museum’s permanent literary history exhibition is entitled „MIKSZÁTH“.
