Polgár: Chapel, Church and Beach Bath
Accommodation in Polgár
Polgár offers two distinct perspectives on the town’s architectural history: the Kálvária Chapel on a hill in the town centre and the Roman Catholic church, built in 1856 in the Late Classical style. During the summer season, the Polgár Beach Bath adds opportunities to swim in medicinal water and take part in sports.
Kálvária Chapel and Church
The Kálvária Chapel is Polgár’s oldest building. Its location on a hill in the town centre makes it a prominent landmark in the town’s history. Different details come to the fore in the case of the church: its construction date and style provide an architectural context. Those interested in the development of local buildings can compare two different features: the age of the chapel and the church’s dating to 1856.
The stylistic classification of the Roman Catholic church also provides a specific point of reference: it was built in the Late Classical style. Together with the year of construction, this gives a precise picture of the church building without the need for an extensive description. The chapel, in turn, combines its status as the oldest building with its location in the town centre. Both aspects make these buildings distinct points of interest for a culturally focused stay in Polgár.
Seasonal Swimming
The Polgár Beach Bath offers a different focus from the buildings. During the summer season, it offers opportunities to swim in medicinal water as well as take part in sports. If you plan to include this in your stay, bear in mind its seasonal operation and check the current opening hours in advance.
Hajdú-Bihar as a Wider Travel Destination
The wider travel destination of Hajdú-Bihar also includes the Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park – the Puszta World Heritage site. It covers nearly 75,000 hectares in the Great Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. As a cultural landscape, the area preserves visible evidence of more than 2,000 years of traditional pastoralism. This is a distinct regional landscape focus, alongside Polgár’s buildings and seasonal beach bath.
Within the wider travel destination of Hajdú-Bihar, the Hortobágyi-halastó fishpond system is designated as a Ramsar site, an Important Bird Area, part of the World Heritage site and a Natura 2000 site. For nature enthusiasts, several conservation designations are associated here with a specific landscape. The Hortobágyi-halastó nature trail offers walks of 3.6, 5.4 or 10 kilometres; none of the three routes includes difficult sections. The different lengths make it easy to compare the distances.
Nature Experiences and Regional Exhibitions
Crane migration is also a well-known natural attraction in Hortobágy. Around 1,500 visitors watch the cranes at feeding sites during the day and at their roosting sites at sunset; the exact number of visitors may vary by season. The “The World of Cranes” exhibition in the visitor centre complements the theme with a diorama, tactile objects, quiz questions, a magnetic puzzle and a digital drawing board. It offers experiential learning and entertainment for all age groups.
The Hortobágyi Wildlife Park showcases the native wildlife of the Hungarian Puszta, including wolves, Przewalski’s horses, vultures and pelicans. A bookable Land Rover safari, led by an expert guide, takes visitors to see wild horses and aurochs. Another option is an approximately 90-minute carriage ride through the Hortobágyi Puszta, offering insights into the region’s natural and cultural history as well as its pastoral traditions. Check the safari booking conditions in advance; the approximate duration of the carriage ride is a useful guide for planning your time.
The Shepherds’ Museum in Hortobágy focuses on the lives of shepherds and displays handmade clothing, tools and decorated personal items. It is housed in a former coach house that was part of the Hortobágyi Csárda complex. This gives the displayed objects a historical architectural context. The Hortobágy National Park Visitor Centre also provides information about programmes and events and sells products made by regional craftspeople, as well as books and T-shirts. The “Nature of Hortobágy” exhibition introduces the diverse flora and fauna of the Hortobágy landscape.
