Nyíradony offers two distinct points of interest for a culture- and history-focused stay: the Gúti Temple Ruins on the outskirts and the Móricz Zsigmond Cultural Centre in the town centre. One evokes an earlier church with its surviving sections of wall; the other is a meeting place for groups from various artistic disciplines.

Architecture and culture in the town

The Gúti Temple Ruins lie in the Gúti Forest on the outskirts of Nyíradony. The surviving sections of wall of the former single-nave church are divided by narrow window openings; the church also had a sacristy. This site therefore draws attention both to the basic form of the former church building and to individual details of the surviving structure.

The Móricz Zsigmond Cultural Centre is located in the town centre. The then large-council municipality founded and built it in 1963. Today, it is a meeting place for groups from various artistic disciplines. Thus, alongside its historic church building, Nyíradony also offers a connection to the town’s cultural life. Anyone looking for a hotel in Nyíradony can use these two local themes as a guide when planning their trip.

The wider destination of Hajdú-Bihar

In the wider destination of Hajdú-Bihar, the Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park – the Puszta World Heritage Site offers another perspective: it covers nearly 75,000 hectares in the Great Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. This cultural landscape preserves visible evidence of more than 2,000 years of traditional pastoralism. The Hortobágyi-halastó fishpond system is also part of this regional natural and cultural heritage; it is a Ramsar site, an Important Bird Area, part of the World Heritage Site, and a Natura 2000 site.

For walks along the Hortobágyi-halastó nature trail, routes of 3.6, 5.4, or 10 kilometres are available; none has any difficult sections. The Hortobágy Wildlife Park showcases the native wildlife of the Hungarian Puszta, including wolves, Przewalski’s horses, vultures, and pelicans. A bookable Land Rover safari, led by an expert guide, takes visitors to see wild horses and aurochs. If you are planning a safari, it is worth checking the booking conditions.

Another nature experience in the wider destination of Hajdú-Bihar is the crane migration in Hortobágy. Around 1,500 visitors watch the cranes at their feeding grounds during the day and at their roosting sites at sunset; visitor numbers may vary by season. The World of Cranes exhibition offers a different focus: it combines experiential learning and entertainment for all ages, including a diorama, tactile objects, quiz questions, a magnetic puzzle, and a digital drawing board. A carriage ride of about an hour and a half through the Hortobágy Puszta introduces visitors to the area’s natural and cultural history and pastoral traditions. As schedules may change, it is worth checking the dates.

The cultural history of the Puszta is also explored in several exhibitions. The Shepherds’ Museum presents the lives of shepherds, along with handcrafted clothing, tools, and decorated personal belongings. It is housed in a former coach house that belonged to the Hortobágyi Csárda complex. The Körszín exhibition features faithfully furnished workshops devoted to traditional crafts, including saddlery, pottery, blacksmithing, hat-making, and wagon-building.

The exhibition at the Hortobágyi Csárda explores the history of the inn, travel across the Puszta, and its famous guests; it also includes historical costume try-ons and a photo spot. At the Hortobágy National Park Visitor Centre, the Nature of Hortobágy exhibition showcases the landscape’s rich flora and fauna. Together, these regional attractions offer different ways to explore the area: from landscapes and wildlife observation to shepherd life, crafts, and exhibition history.
