Hegykő: Thermal Baths, Fishing and Culture
Accommodation in Hegykő
Hegykő combines a thermal bath that welcomes guests year-round with a fishing lake and two cultural sites with different focuses. The options range from the medicinal water and pools of Hegykői Termálfürdő to Hegykői Horgásztó, the lace collection at Csipkeház and Vasfüggöny Emlékhely. When planning your trip, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: swimming and relaxation, fishing in accordance with the applicable rules, or a cultural topic. The conditions differ for each, so choose what suits your planned visit.
Thermal Baths and Fishing: Two Ways to Enjoy the Water
Hegykői Termálfürdő has indoor and outdoor pools with medicinal water and welcomes guests year-round for therapeutic bathing, exercise and relaxation. These uses give the baths a broad appeal; for practical planning, however, it is worth distinguishing between the indoor and outdoor pools. The seasonal operation of individual pools may vary. If you plan to use an outdoor pool in particular, check the current seasonal arrangements before your visit. This helps you distinguish the baths’ year-round operation from the seasonal details that apply to individual pools.
Hegykői Horgásztó is a 4.9-hectare gravel-pit lake, with a depth of 0.5 to 3.0 metres. Fishing takes place from prepared fishing spots. You will need a valid fishing permit for the lake and must comply with the fishing regulations. So preparation for fishing involves not only the lake itself, but also the applicable rules. Since regulations and permit arrangements can change, check the current requirements before fishing. The figures for the lake’s area and depth provide a concrete picture of it; they do not replace the fishing regulations or the required permit.
A Lace Collection and Remembrance of the Iron Curtain
Csipkeház in Hegykő was established primarily to display a unique lace collection. The collection is therefore its clear focus. Groups can also visit the house in winter by prior arrangement. If you are planning a winter trip as a group, coordinate your visit with the operator in advance; making arrangements beforehand is a condition of visiting. This lets you plan your visit to Csipkeház around the collection while taking into account the special winter arrangements for groups.
Vasfüggöny Emlékhely presents three historical phases of the Iron Curtain faithfully and mainly using original materials. The memorial site is at its original location and was built partly from original materials. The presentation and the site itself bring together different aspects: the exhibition divides the subject into historical phases, while the site is the original location. For directions, the memorial site can be reached from Fertő utca, which runs alongside Szent Mihály-templom in Hegykő. Fertő utca therefore offers a specific landmark for finding your way.
In the Wider Destination of Győr-Moson-Sopron
Within the wider destination of Győr-Moson-Sopron, the Fertő/Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape includes the westernmost steppe lake in Eurasia, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and lakeshores. Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park; the Hungarian part of the lake has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj Cultural Landscape was granted UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001.
The Hegykő attractions differ in a clear way: the thermal baths are about medicinal water, exercise and relaxation, while Horgásztó is for fishing with a lake permit and in accordance with the fishing regulations. The two cultural sites have other focuses: the lace collection at Csipkeház and the history of the Iron Curtain at Vasfüggöny Emlékhely. This lets you plan your trip around whichever interest matters most to you.
